It used to be called figure skating, because the skaters would actually skate figures. The judges would then actually walk onto the ice to make sure every mark was in the correct place. Some of the harder figures included figure eights.
Jumps and spins were not introduced until later, and then they didn't do figures at all. I don't know why they stopped doing figures, probably because it was too hard to judge, and it was kind of a boring event.

Used to be called figure skating as skaters skate figures and patterns on the ice in competitions, literally.

people are saying that it used to be called figure skating but it still is called figure skating.
