I have been trying to find out some information on children born with a single umbilicial artery and I cant find anything about children that are not infants. My daugher is 6 yrs old and having health problems and she had only one artery in her umbilical cord when she was born. So what I am wondering is, even if there are no major problems determined while she was an infant could problems show up later? She has been complaining of her lower back hurting and been running fever for long time, but shows no other symptoms (like the flu or cold or anything). I have taken her to the doctor and they are culturing her urine. Could she have a problem with her kidneys from having the single artery? Please help me if you can...I am very worried, so if anyone knows anything about it or has experience with their own child please let me know.

I know that the umbilical has nothing to do with her now, but could it affect the growth and development and its just showing up now.

There should be no longer term affects due to a single umbilical artery unless she would have had other more serious birth defects associated with it. The umbilical artery serves to purpose after birth, and is quickly collapsed and obliterated by natural processes whether there are one or two.
