(my sister's in the airforce) but why does everyone act like serving in the military is the greatest thing since sliced bread...why do we always say "They are fighting for our freedom or our country"

Isn't our country already free?
Aren't our rights unalieanable?

I know i will have enraged responses but i just want someone elses perspective so don't chew me out or say i'm a surrender monkey!!!

It's about sacrifice. Your sister is making sure that the freedoms we have today are the freedoms we will continue to enjoy for many years to come. It will be the same freedoms that your kids will have someday. I respect and admire anyone willing to sacrifice their time and effort, their life, to do something they believe to be important. I am not saying I agree with the war, or any war, what I am saying is that without people like your sister, and millions like her, our country and this world would not be what it is today. Next time someone says something about the military and the fighting for freedom, think about what this world would be like if we didn't stand up for ourselves and stand up for others that can't protect themselves.

Well of course you're not being rude or bitchy, it's good to question "authority" or exercise your freedom of speech..

People admire the servicemen because well, they do service for our country. Like we honor doctors, teachers, cops, and firefighters etc etc etc.. Except our servicemen are in the field of danger everyday, yet no matter how stupid their governments request are, they don't ***** and revolt about it but they keep their oath and keep doing it..

Without a military a country will fall, without teachers/doctors/etc and a good government, the country will fall.

Our rights will always be taken away or tried to be taken away by some other third world dictator who feels that this country is a easy gain, if we didn't have a military to defend it. The war isn't the only thing the military do. Have you ever saw the movie "A Few Good Men" ? The quote which goes something like this .. "There is a wall outside this world and people who defend that wall, ..."...

And usually they aren't really fighting for our "freedom" but they are fighting for their country and defending its freedom, so you should honor them for doing that at least.

Oh yeah the quote is this..
"Son, we live in a world that has walls, and those walls have to be guarded by men with guns. Whose gonna do it? You? You, Lt. Weinburg? I have a greater responsibility than you could possibly fathom. You weep for Santiago, and you curse the marines. You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know. That Santiago's death, while tragic, probably saved lives. And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, saves lives. You don't want the truth because deep down in places you don't talk about at parties, you want me on that wall, you need me on that wall. We use words like honor, code, loyalty. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent defending something. You use them as a punchline. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very freedom that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said thank you, and went on your way, Otherwise, I suggest you pick up a weapon, and stand a post. Either way, I don't give a damn what you think you are entitled to. "

Well remember, there will always be someone out there who is going to take away your candy or hurt you badly, and that's why your parents are there to protect you.. or the teachers..

I think people go overboard because they are trying to differentiate between a policy they may disagree with (i.e. George Bush,Iraq, terrorism, etc.) and the people who have no choice once they take Uncle Sam's money to go enforce those policies. It's true nowadays that no one is forced in like in the times of the draft. Now its your own fault if you are in(myself 1989-1993! About 4 years and 9 days too much for me!!) but you can't say what will happen when you go in or where you will go. You drift where they tell you to go. Even if you hate what they do you have no choice if you want that honorable discharge or the veterans preference on a civil service exam.
Ultimately old George Washington had it right when he said to avoid foreign entanglements in his Farewell Address!!

its our troops that are keeping this country safe so that we prevent another 9/11. Apparently our country isnt free. Nothing is free. Land of the free and home of the brave. and we have our brave soldiers serving their time and they should be the most respected people and they should get paid more than any football player or anybody out there because they are putting their life on the line so that people like us can wake up every day and live the life we live.

Hi,,, honey,, being a Vietnam and Desert Shield-Storm vet ... I have to tell you that your freedom is Not Free... Our freedom was and is bought and paid for by the service of Men and Women of the Armed Forces....
Without them, we would not be the country that we are now... The reason you don't feel threatened at this moment is because people are trying to keep our new enemy across the sea from us...
Also, just like the other day, Dec 7 , we Remember Pearl Harbor, and now on 9-11 we remember The Trade Centers and Pentagon and the people that died .... the people that caused that, would Take Your Freedom away...if they could...

Good luck

Have you ever looked at what Alquada had planned. They wanted to take us over. They planned on "conquering" many countries with a 100 year plan. And also, right now we have the Iraq conflict. Some of the people serving will still be in when its over. We will be fighting over some other conflict. Do you know how soon we would be attacked if we had no one to fight them off? You have to think past Iraq and current conflicts. There will be more and we do serve a purpose to the home land.

i pretty much agree with shadowfox.

just one note- being in the military is a huge sacrifice, you may not see the full extent of it because yours sister is in the air force (no i'm not bashing on the air force, it's service members generally have more perks and less crap than the other branches: shorter deployments, less moving). and they end up doing all the horrendous stuff that no one else wants to so we can keep our freedoms....

Well, the military has a lot of support right now bc everyone is scared shitless bc of 911. There wasn't nearly that much support before that. People are risking their lives bc we're actually at war now. That's why...

most people had spit on many of service members back in the days of Vietnam.
Some still do to this day.

that is very disrespectful.

Some have grown up and are trying to make amend with themselves, that is what i think.

I thank them for many reasons that my Grandfathers and Great Uncles have taught me. (they are WWII-Korea vets)

for respect.

so if you see a service members buy them a drink, let them go ahead of you line, it is the little things that say thank you also.
