I agree it can be dangerous. What I would suggest is that you use a penpal finding site. A lot of them help you protect your identity (your real name and your email address) until you are confident with the person you are corresponding with. Wikipedia has a section on penpals which is very helpful. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pen_pal. Personally, I use http://www.friendshack.com and have found it very secure (although there can be creeps everywhere).
Take your time before you decide on who you want to penpal with. Good luck!

You just avoid giving things like contact information (address, phone numbers, etc.) I didn't really look over this site but it's a penpal site.
