This is caused by strep pyogenes. There is bright well defined redness in the peri-anal area and this extends away from the anus.
It is usually seen in children under the age of four. There is peri-anal itching and discomfort. Bowel movements can be quite painful. The children usually feel well. There may be an associated history of a sore throat.

Have you done an internet search for anal strep? Also, call the doctor's office back tomorrow and ask that the doctor call you. Don't tell him you suspect abuse, just ask him what kinds of things can cause the anal strep, and is there a way of preventing it from happening again. My gut feeling is that if he suspected abuse, he would have said so there in the office. They have to report suspected abuse, you know. I would think this might be from an infection in his intestinal tract.

According to webmd it is caused by a strep virus. It is pretty common in children from 4 months to 10 years and can be spread from family member to family member. I would go to webmd.com and type in perianal strep, there is a lot of good information about this. I would read up on the symptoms and make sure everyone gets treated ASAP, it can respread between family members. Everyone needs antibiotics (amoxicillin).

Don't worry, it's not from abuse.

I would definitely ask your doctor this question to put your mind at ease. I personally have never heard of anal strep, but the streptococcus bacteria are pretty much everywhere and there are different strains of it so it is probably normal. Don't jump to conclusions until you ask your doctor. Good luck!

I know what you mean, although I don't think your hypothesis is right. It could be that sons who pee when their mothers spank them are the sons of petite women because they are more fearful of their mothers than the sons of large women (perhaps lets say for a correlation reason; maybe small women overassert themselves as disciplinarians) and so that is the relationship of cause and effect, and very unlikely it is a sexual thing. Probably a correlation between fear and embarassment with respect to the OTHER actions of the mothers, not including the spankings. Who spanks 6 year olds these days anyways? Who spanks at all? There are much more effective, safe and normal ways to teach a child right from wrong, and spanking is not one of them.

Ive never heard of anal strep, but I have heard that the strep virus is all over us and everywhere, it just blooms and flurishes if the conditions are right...They say we carry the strep in our mouths (and assuming any opening in our bodies) commonly.. So maybe your son just wasnt wiping properly.. Hopefully nothing worse comes out of your situation..
God bless you!.. Hope he gets well soon.

If it was my son I would ask him in the most pleasant setting
possible...maybe over a bowl of ice cream. I would ask him
if anyone, anywhere has touched him below his waist . I can't continue because I'm probably going outside the guidelines.
But for goodness sake, be absolutely sure that noone is
physically abusing your son. Child molestation has become
an increasing crime. It is up to you to protect your son and
not to fluff it off.

I agree with Mountain girl. As a mom and as a former teacher, I beg you to find out. It could just be a simple infection, but you'll never forgive youself if you don't ask now.
If you've never spoken to you child about physical boundaries and all that, do it now. Just an easy, casual, non confrontational little chat. A good article to read:

I don't mean to sound paranoid, but it's something you have to do.

Best of wishes!

According to the web site below, they don't seem certain how it gets from throat to rectum. Likely culprit appears to be "scratching an itchy" rectum. They assume normal gastro-intestinal acids would kill the bacteria, but not certain. They assume it is not likely to be caused by communal bathing, but not sure.

Doesn't sound like a typical abuse situation, but a disease that should be treated.
