I've been depressed and the way I cope with it is by eating. I used to be very thin and in shape, but have gained 20 lbs the past year and lost all motivation to exercise. My doctor prescribed me Wellbutrin because he said it helps you lose weight. Is this true? Has anyone lost weight using it? I'm hoping once I get over the depression I'll be more motivated to exercise and eat better which will help anyway.

Weight gain and over eating/under eating are both signs of depression. To that person who said it's a nervous thing, I think you're misinformed.

Reuben, have you had any bad side effects from the Wellbutrin? I haven't started mine yet because I didn't want any bad side effects during finals week. IM me, my display name is my ID. Thanks!

I've recently started Wellbutrin too, as every SSRI I've been on has caused me to gain weight. And the one that didn't--Prozac--made me emotionally numb.
It's usually more likely to help you lose weight, as it doesn't cause the weight gain SSRIs do and it dulls your appetite.
I've been on it for about two weeks, and I've found that I don't have the munchies all the time and that I rarely crave anything, which is good, cos I love junk food. lol

Wellbutrin is clinically proven to have weight loss as a side effect. It should help you lose 5-10 pounds, but the only proven way to lose weight is through diet and exercise. Wellbutrin might help you lose even more weight considering your reason for gaining weight is due to a food dependance. Wellbutrin should help you chemically to be less depressed and therefore eat less.

Personally, if I had a doctor who prescribed ANYTHING for me (nevermind a potent antidepressant), and even after that doctor told me something about the medication, I still felt the need to come to a forum like YA and ask "Is this true?", I think I would be looking for a new doctor - as it seems you don't really trust what this guy has told you.

Wellbutrin is not a casual drug. It can have a lot of side effects, and is difficult to get off of. I do not think that prescribing this for weight loss is prudent. Are you also on an exercise program (ok'd by this doctor), and has he sent you to consult with a nutritionist, to make sure your diet is healthy? Just writing out a prescription for a pill is not the answer to long-lasting weight loss and good overall fitness. I understand that he might have prescribed it to treat your depression, but, the weight loss thing is a separate issue, and should be dealt with independently AND concurrently. Grill this doctor for more information. Also go to WebMD for a lot of very helpful information about this (and all) drugs.

I think that you WILL feel more motivated once your depression symptoms have eased, but, get the ball rolling in the right direction by requesting this doctor refer you to a nutritionist. Good luck to you. You can be your best advocate, but only when you are properly armed with as much information about your own condition as possible.

I've too heard that wellbutrin will help you lose weight. That's why many who are familiar with antidepressants choose that one if they could, because many others cause weight gain. I feel that you should deal with your depression for what it is. Weight gain and overeating are sure signs of depression. Also, when you are depressed, you don't have the energy or motivation to do anything. My advice to you is to get off of your butt and do something. Don't rely on the med for weight loss. Besides, half the battle of depression is getting out of bed each day. Don't give in to the depression. Make yourself get up. Don't weight until the depression is over to start. You won't win that way. You will be waiting a long time.

I took wellbutrin for awhile and I did lose some weight with it. Each person varies, but it is a bit of an appetite suppresant. As long as your doctor believes you can benefit from it as an anti-depressant, then you should be fine with it.

and talk to your doctor yadda yadda yadda if you have any wierd side effects, etc.
