The first thing you have to do is RUN. I mean you have to be in incredible shape to ever achieve anything in the boxing world. If you don't have the dedication to do that, don't bother with boxing.

everyone here has really great points, but their points are really for BEFORE you start training..

if all you do is run and hit a few bags, when you get into a ring, your going to get destroyed. That’s the reality…. Running gets your endurance, no question about it, I'd say that you want to work up to 3 mile runs 3 days a week, and for the other 3, do 1 mile runs... yes you will be running 6 days a week...and that’s what I call price of admission, if you cant do that, your going to have a really hard time being successful in the ring…

To answer your actual question… if you really want to train yourself, which isn’t really recommended, there’s a few steps your going to have to take.

first things first, get videos. Only an idiot will tell you to get a heavy bag, speed bag and go at it, they don’t hit back. More importantly you have to learn technique and develop your style. Kenny Weldon makes a great video series called you can learn to box, very good basic beginner stuff. He’s not the most electrifying guy on video, so be ready for that, but what he teaches is the real deal..

I’d follow up with some advanced videos too, Jeff Finch has a few through title boxing that are really good. Pay attention to this part.. some people will say that the videos are a waste of time, and they are full of it. If your willing to do what they suggest and put it together, then your be leaps and bounds ahead of the game…there is no “certification” to be a boxing trainer, so you’ll find there are a lot of people that don’t know S**t about being a good trainer… and just because someone fought doesn’t qualify them… half the trainers for the world champions never set foot into a ring.. its about communication and teaching…. And since you are in the market to learn, I would strongly suggest learning from professionals. The only disadvantage is that there is no feedback … you’ll have to get a mirror and work at getting the form right yourself.

Now personally I would join a boxing gym and use their equipment, but if your going to set up your own shop your going to need a heavy bag, speed bag, double ended bag, and mirrors at the least.

Boxing is no joke, it’s a very serious competition sport. Eventually when you decide to compete you will have to get a trainer, no way around it, since you have to have a corner man, and it can’t be yourself. But there’s no reason that you cant get a great start on your own, that’s how I did it. Just remember that form and endurance is key, and if you can master that your going to have a great amateur career.

buy a punching bag,go to a gym and take some courses, shadow box in a mirror consentrate on making as many combos combows jump rope alot run alot run up and down stair or step up and down on a wooden box or crate for at least don't stop for more than fourtyfive seconds between exercises, get some nice boxing gloves with hand wraps and a mouth pease and spar with a friend or brother, to build a really great punching bag tie a peice of nylon strap to the bag about your face hidth attach a small been bag to the end so when you punch the bag it will swing the stringed bag around in a circle, learn to duck it every time the more you punch the faster it will go the more tough it is to block or duck under

Nobody can train themself unless they are a trainer... if it makes sense... To become a fighter you need a real trainer that will see you at least once a week and has the appropriate equipment.
There is so much to learn, sure you can teach yourself jabs, hooks, upper cuts but your trainer can have their own techniques to pass onto you. They will also train you to dodge punches, block properly without breaking an arm :)
