Im really scared my cute little puppy will grow up to be mean and bite all the time. I had a small dog once growing up that was a great puppy but became viscious at an older age. Any advice to keep my small breed pup from becoming a terror animal.

Don't spoil him! The easiest way to make a small dog mean is to stick it in a purse, feed it from the table, and laugh when it misbehaves. The new 'fad', thanks to Paris Hilton and other idiots, is to treat small dogs like babies- they're not! Dogs need order, routine, and discipline just as much as they need love and affection. Take your puppy to obedience classes, they have puppy ones all the way through advanced education, and it will help you establish rules and commands for your pup to follow.

There are also many articles available online about 'being the alpha dog'- a wonderful technique made more available to the public through Ceasar Milan's show, the Dog Whisperer. Basically, you have to allow the dog to live in your home and be part of YOUR 'pack', not cater to his every whim and let him run the show. This is done by very simply and non-confrontationally showing the dog that everything is done when you say so. For example, make him sit down outside the kitchen doorway while you prepare his food, call him to you, make him sit, and then give it to him. This shows him that he only eats when he's being calm and obedient; on the flip side, letting him run in circles around your ankles barking at you while you pour the food shows him that he's demanding food, and you're obeying his wishes. Some people don't like the alpha-dog idea, but it really is the best way to keep your dog acting like a sweet happy puppy and not a spastic demon-dog.

Good luck with your baby, and don't worry- dogs grow up the way they're raised, and if you raise him well, he'll never become the mean dog you had before.

Here's a great article, read through this for more information on why sweet pups can become viscious:

Don't allow the puppy to bite, even playing. If you push your hand into its mouth whenever it puts its teeth on you it will try to push your hand out with its tongue, it will soon get the idea that this is not fun. Never, never tease the dog, treat it with respect. Be its leader, make the dog get out of your way instead of walking around it, always go through a doorway before the dog does, make sure you eat first then the dog has its meal when you are finished and always sleep higher up (physically) than the dog. Then he will see you as his leader and will always have respect for you. He will be happier too.

Start with puppy kindergarten classes. This will not only teach the pup basic obedience but will socialize him with other dogs as well as their owners. Continue with more advanced obedience classes. The classes are great because of the socialization and the lessons taught. Take the puppy lots of places to socialize the pup, don't let the dog be fearful get it use to strange and unusual situations and noises. Give the dog lots of love and TLC.

Take your puppy to puppy kindergarden and then follow up in the future with periodic obedience. Also take your dog on walks to help socialize him/her. It will help strenghten your bond with both the walks and the obedience. Good luck.

Treat your dog with the same rules that you would treat a big dog.
