This is a tricky question. Jesus was historicly a real person. But you can't prove what Jesus spiritually/mystically did was a myth and yet you can't prove it was real either (spiritually/mystically). I think the best way to go about this would be to compare him to other people who cannot be proven fact or myth spiritually or mystically . Take Vlad the Impaler (Dracula) for example, historicly a real person but it cannot be proven either way wether he had mystical powers or not. Jim Jones is another example, a real person who claimed to be able to spiritually heal people. This cannot be proven or disproven. The myth arguements for these types of people will apply to Jesus as well.

You can't prove Jesus was a myth because he really existed. Now whether you believe he was the savior of man is whole other issue. But Jesus is not only mentioned in the Bible he is also mentioned in Roman text; and yes he was tortured and crucified. So the question as asked can't be answered. Jesus was real this is an historic fact.
Also,You will never be able to prove whether Jesus was or was not divine. Your teacher has either set you up to fail or maybe your teacher does not know his/her history.

Alas although there is no actual proof that he did live, you cannot prove he did not...much like the myth of King Arthur (they still don't know who he might have been, or was he a combination of more than one great king?)
You'll basically have to go on the premise that there is no hard proof, just writings over time, by many people, their reliability unknown and the fact that many parts of the Jesus story were taken from older myths of other cultures...

you cant prove it because he is not a myth
so what is this a class in ATHEISM 101 ?
anyhow... oooookkkkk....here's what you do... simply explain how the 11 remaining apostles died for belief in someone who didnt exist?
wave your hands and mention that several dozen non biblical references mention Jesus and come up with some reasonable plausible explanation why the historians could all be wrong
then all you need to do is spin how and why the Jewish writing and rabbis mention Jesus, a mythical person.... Jesus didn't exist...but he was a deceiver???
then simply press on confidently... just explain why the Romans decided to make grave robbing a capital effect around 34AD after the myical you know who supposedly rose... they really must get ticked over the resurection of a mythical guy..eh?
as a slam dunk, mention the 69 weeks of Daniel. A prophesy that prohecy would be sealed and eternal righteousness will be brought in when the Messiah is cut off... and would be 69 weeks of years after the decree to rebuild Jerusalem... which is around 31AD... sugggest it is a lucky guess????
and in closing then read Isaiah 53 and tell the class to listen to see if you can hear each of these points made and how many times each... the suffering servant will be rejected, suffer for our sin, die and overcome death or if it is just a mistaken interpretation? ask the class if anyone believe Jesus is the Messiah and see if anyone would stick up for Him
ORRRRRrrrrr
give it up because Jesus is real

You cannot prove that Jesus was a myth. There have been scientific and archeological findings to support His existence. Even most athiests, though they don't believe He is supernatural, will admit that He existed, and was a teacher/preacher.
ETA: Tough break, man... I wouldn't want that assignment. Sorry I couldn't help.
God Bless,
Jesus loves you.

Wow... That's a tough assignment.
I don't think there's any way to do it, though.
I guess maybe you could pick a fight on the definition of "Jesus" but it's pretty hard to debate the existence of a significant historical character.
BTW, I am a solid Christian, but just looking at this from a debate perspective here.... :-)

First, I don't believe *he* was a myth but I do believe many of the miracles he is accredited with are.
I think you can find these 'miracles' in many other traditions.
That's where I would start; find very similar 'miracles' (virgin birth, etc) in other traditions. Give example of these other cultures that had very similar miracles. Then explain that mythology is/was important in developing the human psyche and this is why you can see these similar miracles in different cultures.
Read Joseph Campbell. He's the best in this subject.

You can't, unless you build a time machine and go back in time. In a history class in high school we learned that Jesus was in fact a real person, but the part about him being the "messiah" is up to the individual to decide. With my knowledge of history, I decided that Jesus was a great... man... and not a messiah.

I assume you're talking about him being the son of God that you're trying to disprove. The best you can do is prove it to yourself. You can't prove it was a myth, but you can't prove it was real. Just because it was written in a book does not mean it was real.

Maybe not a myth but just how the Jesus in the Bible is a myth; like the similarities between Buddha and Jesus; and guess which one came first?
