A friend of mine just recently lost her job. The way her search for another job is going, she's sure she won't be working again until after the holidays. Can she file her 2006 return now?

She has to have her W2 to file. The IRS will not start taking electronically filed returns until around January 15th.

Also, there are some tax laws that were just signed into effect, so the 1040 forms will probably be undergoing some changes now.

There would be no point in filing early. If you can find the tax forms, I suppose you could file it, but the IRS might question it if they noticed the date signed was in 2006. If you want to start filling out the forms, go to http://www.irs.gov/forms/pubs/index.html

The IRS doesn't begin accepting returns until January and W2's don't have to be postmarked until 1/31. So, No, she can not file her return now.

Yes, I am pretty sure she can file as long as she already has her 2006 W-2 Forms. If not she will have to wait until she gets them.
