If the person is from a country with a high rate of illegal immigrants the letter from you can be, and is likely to be, used as evidence that the person has a support system in the United States which makes overstaying likely. It's a catch-22.

It is vital because the foreign country's government wants to avoid having a person visit then decide to take up permanent residence without going through the proper procedures. There is usually an invitation as well as the appropriate paperwork filled out according to requirements for entry into the country and a letter from your employer at this end stating that you have a paying job and that you will be returning to the US by a specific date after visiting Mr. XYZ from ABC corporation...etc. Try www.govspot.com. They have a link to the specific embassy's as well as a link to the State Department which should be very helpful.

To ensure someone in the USA will be responsible for you and know your whereabouts at all times..The gov't doesn't want you to come to the US, stay and be a burden on society thru illegal immigration..Therefore the person you are visiting needs to request your presence as a show of invitation and legitimacy. Thank the diaper heads for this kind of treatment of our foreign friends. sorry but that's our law..Good Luck and hope you get to the land of plenty to visit..
