Pentagram - five pointed star
Pentacle - five pointed star enclosed in a circle
Meaning - depends on what context it is. Generally the pentacle is the symbol of Wiccan belief, with the five points representing the elements (air, earth, fire, water, spirit) encircled because they are all interconnected.
The pentagram has also been used to represent the human body - the arms, legs, and head representing the five points.
Inverted pentagrams (single point downward) have been adopted by some Satanists as a symbol of their beliefs.

There's a ton of information online about it...do a search, you'll find more than I can share here with you and may prefer to use bits and pieces of different sources...
Here's a bit...
"Meaning of the Pentacle: The five-pointed star within a circle is the most common Pagan symbol, and it is typically used to identify oneself as a Pagan or Wiccan. The five points represent the 4 elements plus the spirit, and the circle connects them all. A five-pointed star without the circle is sometimes called a pentagram, rather than a pentacle. Based on numerology, the five points means the pentacle symbolizes the Earth element and can be used as an Earth symbol on an altar"

It was a Christian symbol in medieval times. Five points - five virtues of a knight - generosity, courtesy, chastity, chivalry and piety - five wounds of Christ. It is represent as such in Gawain and the Green Knight.
But the use of the pentagram predates Christianity by far.
Not sure when or why it fell out of favor, or when it became a symbol of evil. One story I came across related its fall to some charlatan a couple of centuries ago who delighted in horrifying and outraging the church-going community, but that may be a myth.
Mainly it is a symbol of Wicca now. To a lot of Christians, it is a vile symbol representing bloodshed, perversion and hate. It is a Freemason symbol. It is also a werewolf symbol for fans of the Werewolf television series and Cursed movie. It was also used as a Motley Crue band symbol. There are other assocations of which I am not aware, I'm sure.

It is an ancient symbol of life.
If you look at DaVinci's work of the human form, you will notice that it has 4 limbs and head at the top.
Also see American Medical Assosiation.
It symbolizes the elements, Earth, Wind, Fire, Air & Spirit.
Inverted it symbolizes the horned God, or Goat of Mendes.
Also known as...Pentalpha, the Endless Knot, the Pentacle of the Virgin, the Seal of the Microcosm, The Star of Knowledge, the Pentacle of the Templars, and sometimes, the Seal of Solomon.

The five-pointed star, or pentagram, is a symbol of Venus, since the planet Venus follows a perfect pentagram in the sky every 8 years.
It was adopted as a sign of life and renewal by many preChristian religions throughout Europe, and has had a religious significance for almost ever faith since then.

it means many many things depending on who you are
a regular pentagram and pentacal are ancients symbols that represent the 5 elements of life (water earth fire wind and spirit) and how they are all connected. it also represend the extremeties of the human (head arms and legs) in renessance medicine. in christianity it represets the wounds of christ (head hands and ankles nailed to the cross and the thorn crown).
if it is inverted then it is a baphomet which is the symbol of true satanists. it represents the face of the devil (baphomet) (horns ears and muzzle sorda like a goat)
it has a meaning in the reading of terot cards but i dont understand those damned things so i cant tell you what a pentacle card means.
it has many many meanings but small minded people only see wiccan and satanist usage so they think it is bad.

The pentacle has lots of meanings behind it, the most common being a representation of earth, air, fire and water.
You'll get people saying it's a symbol of Satan, but you and I at least know the truth. ;)
