In the original rendition, it meant "thou shall not murder."
But with various translations (from Aramaic to Hebrew to Greek and Latin), certain points are lost, and I'm afraid this has been one of them. Certainly, the Bible does allow justified killings, Take the battles the Jews must participate in every now and then against their enemies. And they allow capital punishment for certain crimes as well.

Jesus and the apostles were not violent and they died instead of protecting themselves. That's the sign of a true Christian. This life is not the norm. Resurrection to life back on earth with the wicked people gone under God's Kingdom is the norm. It's just hard to see right now with the point in time we are in.

The commandment is actually "Thou shalt not murder." There is a difference in killing and murdering. The Bible even tells us times when we SHOULD kill. Self defense is certainly ok.

So much for that absolute morality thing, huh?
First 4 commandments = scare tactics/irrelevance to morality.
Only 3 that make sense: Thou shalt not steal, thou shalt not murder, thou shalt not commit adultery.
We didn't need Christianity to tell us that those three things were OMFG BAD.
Last 3 commandments: irrelevant/ridiculous.

The commandment could be better translated: "Thou shalt do no murder". Does that help?

God made no exceptions to this. There is a reason Jesus said "love your enemies, pray for those you deceitfully use you, and bless those who curse you." He also said don't fear those who can destroy your body, fear the one who can destroy your soul.
