If you can get away with not adding anything then don't. The only thing that would be reasonable to use is a small amount of the cooking water of your boiled the pumpkin. If you roasted the pumpkin, you can add a small amount of water as well to reach the consistency you like.

No you shouldn't. You want puree, not sauce or soup.
