Be consistent. Stick with punishments, but also rewards. Take away things for a short amount of time that mean the most. Use consequences. Eg: If you don't behave you will not play later.

Most of all, love. Kids react to everything around them, so something could be bothering your 8 year old causing he/she to act this way. If you want to talk more and give some more specifics, email me and I'd be happy to help.

Patience.... I also have a 8 year old and he drives me nuts at times. But I realised one thing, whatever children learn are from us parents. Since they are born they are observing our every move and sometimes when they behave badly we just cannot accept it, but in fact if you think it is only a mirror image of how we behave. So the best way to turn children around is to lead by example and by patience. This works. If you can change yourself then only you can change your child. Sorry if I said more than I should have nut8all@yahoo.com

Depends on your definition of not behaving is, but I would guess that a little attention would go a long way. Instead of reacting to the situation the same way you always would, try another route. If you scream and yell, try sitting and talking. If you overanalyze, try overlooking. If you ground, try doing something special together. Catch them off guard. Chances are, they are only trying to either get your attention or to see how far you are willing to let them go. Show them that you are someone to trust and that even if it means punishment, you have their best interests at heart. And EXPLAIN that to them. Parents sometimes forget that they are little people with big brains, and they don't like to be ordered around like the family pet. They like information. Instead of saying something is wrong, explain to them WHY it is wrong. Even if they act like they aren't listening, something will sink in.

Take away some cherished privileges (TV, video games, etc.)and some freedoms (going to friends' houses, etc.) every time he/she acts up. That always worked on my kids!

Counting worked, too and it was a way for me to keep calm while disciplining them. I'd tell them to stop doing something. If they continued the behavior, I'd count "1", then "2" and, if I got to "3" they had to go have a time out in their rooms. Eventually, they learned that when they heard "1", I was serious! We rarely get to "3" anymore.

is you child also having trouble in school? my son is 7 and has behavioral issuestoo. i used to think that he was only like that wiyh me. but then again, that was before he started school. when the school addressed me, i talket to his pediatrician. we decided to have him evaluated for adhd by a psychologist. and sure enough he does have it. we decicided not to medicate, as we are trying other means first. having him in family counceling has really helped. she gives a many new tecniques to use at hame as well as in school to help modify his behavior. alot of the bevavior is learned at home first, unintentionally of course, as parent we kind of enable them. there are parenting courses offered to you, and ther is areally great book out called, the difficult child, that is very informative. you will have to make changes too, which is what i found to be the most challenging!
