A friend of mine is having twins, but they're a boy and a girl. She doesn't want them to have names that are too common. Do you have any ideas for cool names for twins?

No name suggestions, just a word of caution for your friend.

I went to school with four sets of twins and I'm still in touch with two of the sets and I would caution going with "twin" names.

Carter and Conrad HATED both having similar names and it really added to the confusion.

Pamela and Peter HATED being called the "p's" and Pam especially hated someone mixing her name up with her twin brother.

Marcia and Melissa didn't hate the similar names but it was tough for everyone else to keep track of them and years later, Marcia started using her middle name so maybe she actually did mind it.

Out of all the twins I knew well, Carmen and Paulo had the least trouble with the twin thing and I think having really definite names to go with their separate identities really helped.

My son has one set of twins in his grade and they also have the similar name problem (Jason/Justin). It drives the teacher nuts because they're identical. I think if they had their own very separate names, it would help them to be individuals a lot sooner.

Best wishes to your friend. I'm sure she'll come up with wonderful names.

You could get names from historical/literary twins, for example:

Alexander and Cleo, Henrietta and Thomas, Apollo and Diana, Davy and Dora, Louis and Lucienne, Alanna and Thom, Violet and Sebastian.

Although I don't know if anyone would really want to be named any of those!

If she wants them to have the same first initial it's going to be pretty common. If not, pick two different, uncommon names they like and use them. If I were the one having the twins, I'd name my daughter Avalynne and my son Trevor.
