Pour another 3 gal, and add to the 7 gal pail
Pour another 3 gal, and add to 7...which leaves 2 gallons in the 3 gallon pail

1> I will put the amounts of transfer of milk in a more visual way: the first listed number will be the 10 gallon pail, the second will be the 3 gallon pail, and the third will be the 7 gallon pail (example 10-0-0 ->means 10 gallons in the 10 gallon pail, and none in the 3 gallon or 7 gallon pails, respectively). 10-0-0 to 3-0-7, then 3-3-4, then 6-3-1 (this is key because now you have 1 gallon by itself). Then 9-0-1 (moving the 3 gallons to the 10 gallon pail). then 9-1-0, then 2-1-7 (by filling the 7 gallon from the remaining in the 10 gallon). Then 2-3-5 (by filling the remaining amount of pail in the 3 gallon->look you now have 5 gallons by itself). The next step finishes it by combining the 3 gallons with the 2 gallons left in the 10 gallon pail to make 5-0-5.

2> No idea, I'm intrigued to know the answer though.

For the first one: use the 10 gallon bucket to fill the 3 gallon bucket. dump it in the 7 and fill the three up again. once again dump it in the 7. now fill it up one more time and dump one of the 3 gallons in until it fills up the 7. you'll then have 2 gallons in the 3 gallon pail. no dump the 7 back into the 10. dump the 2 gallons in the 3 gallon bucket into the 7. then fill the tree up and dump it in the 7 again. you should have 5 and 5.
The second is probally because 2:45 is pretty early to be milking a cow.

1. pour the milk from the 10 gallon pail into the other two pails. fill the 10 gallon pail half way. Take the remainder and pour into the 7 gallon pail. each will have 5 gallons

2. it was spring and daylight savings started. so at 2:00a.m. the clocks moved forward to 3:00a.m. so there was no 2:45!

ok, the one about the gallons was on a Bruce Willis movie....
i think that tgis is how it goes...
pour from the 10 gallon into the 3 gallon. then oour the 3 gallons into the 7 gallon. there should be 4 more gallons of space, and fill it up 1/2 way...that should give you 5 gallons...then you have 5 gallons left= 2 containers of 5 gals each...

the second one=
1. no one was home?
2. they overslept?
3. didn't mention which morning?
4. didn't mention whose barn?
5. grandpa doesn't have any cows?
6. no alarm clocks?
7. the "next morning" i.e. tomorrow never comes?

(i like no 7)

pour from
10 to 3
3 to 7
10 to 3
3 to 7
10 to 3
now you got 1 in the 10, 6 in the 7 and 3 in the 3 so
3 to 7
now you got 1 in the 10, 7 in the 7 and 2 in the 3
7 to 10
so you got 8 in the 10, 0 in the 7 and 2 in the 3
3 to 7
10 to 3
3 to 7
so you got 5 in the 10 and 5 in the 7 and zero in the 3.

that is one.. the other i dont know... maybe the next morning meant the day after.

1) Okay for simplicity I'm going to color the buckets: Green (10gal), Red (7gal) and Blue (3gal).

1a) Start with a full Green (10gal) bucket, and fill the Blue bucket. (Green = 7g, Red = 0g, Blue = 3g)

1b) Empty the Blue into the Red (Green = 7g, Red = 3g, Blue = 0g)

1c) Take the Green bucket and fill the Blue bucket again. (Green = 4g, Red = 3g, Blue = 3g)

1d) Empty the Blue into the Red again. (Green = 4g, Red = 6g, Blue = 0g)

1e) Take the Green bucket and fill the Blue a third time. (Green = 1g, Red = 6g, Blue = 3g)

1f) Take the Blue and top off the Red bucket. (Green = 1g, Red = 7g, Blue = 2g)

1g) Dump the Red into the Green. (Green = 8g, Red = 0g, Blue = 2g)

1h) Dump the Blue into the Red (Green = 8g, Red = 2g, Blue = 0g)

1i) Take the Green bucket and fill the Blue (Green = 5g, Red = 2g, Blue = 3g)

1j) Dump the Blue into the Red and there you go (Green = 5g, Red = 5g, Blue = 0g)

2) Don't really know, maybe he made the announcement on daylight savings time (rolling clocks back) or when the clocks roll forward.

OR they all could have said "F*** that!! I'm no getting up at 2:45 in the f***ing morning!!" and that's why they didn't show. =P
