Blasphmey is denying the presence of the Holy Spirit. I thought for sure I was Hell bound after I got saved I had a hard time with cussing and I would say God d#$@#^&&* all the time then I went to the pastor and he helped out alot I dont recommend you take Gods name in vain but the true defination of blasphmey is denying the Holy Spirit. I dont think God forbid is wrong depending on how it's used I say Oh my God alot but not in a bad way let God convict your heart if you feel like what your saying is wrong that is probably the Holy Spirit convicting you not to say that again so listen to the Holy Spirit and let the Lord convict you! God Bless you!!

Strictly speaking, I would say that, as a Christian, it is not okay to say "Oh my God". Because the commandment "Thou shall not take the Lord's name in vain". "in vain" means "in an improper or irreverent manner". I can't imagine that when you are using this phrase you are doing it reverently and properly. Not that I am Christian, but it is one of the ten rules you should follow if you pretend to be Christian, but there are plenty of "Christian's" that believe in the death penalty and I think the rule are pretty clear on that too.

Christians generally accept that the phrase "Oh my God" is in violation of the commandment to not take the Lord's name in vain.

Personally, I'm not sure that's really what the commandment was intending, but sometimes it's better to pick your battles and make an effort not to offend.

There are lots of euphamisms that people use which uses God's name in a way it shouldn't be used. For instance, Gee, Golly, Gosh, Goodness. All of these are using God's name in a flippant manner. God's name is to be reverenced and never used in a disrespectable or inappropriate manner. We will give account of the words we use in this life. It's best not to use God's name like that at all.

Not taking the Lord's name in vain, to me, means not using out of context and not using it casually. The typical reaction of "oh my god" is too casual to be appropriate. God forbid is only slightly better.

Lisa,
Though we use the word "God" in today's terms very loosely, God reserved his name to be used only when praising him. The way God sees it is "If you're not communicating with me, then do not say my name." So anytime we use the word "God" and we are not using it to praise or talk to God then we are using the word in vain. There really is no other way to get around it...God's word is His word, and that's the way it has to be no matter how socially acceptable we are with using/hearing the word God be used. I hope my response was helpful for you.

If we read the Bible and come across the phrase oh my God I trust in you or something like that then it is okay. But to say Oh my God just to say it is like taking the name of the Lord in vain.

We studied the commandment Thou shalt not say the name of God in vain...
Vain means using his name in a lie...
But God's name also should not be used in a cursing way!!!
But that is another matter it is blasphemy

If you think you've said His name not out of reverence or as a common phrase blurting, ask Him to forgive you. Try to be more conscience about it so you can curb it. His name should be used in a Holy manner as He is Holy. When people get scared they may say "Oh my God" cuz He's the One they call out to. Be discerning & reverent when using His name!
