How does one unlock the automatic gear shift for '97 Ford Escort? I have to put a key in the slot to unlock.

If it wont release when you step on the break pedal there are a few things that could be wrong, first check the fuses, other possibilities could be the BOO (break on/ off switch), or the shift lock actuator itself. Turn the key to on and step on the brake.

they are designed that way so kids don't accidentally shift them into gear
