Definitely use royal icing!!
4 egg whites
4 cups sifted confectioners' sugar
1 teaspoon lemon extract
DIRECTIONS
Beat egg whites in clean, large bowl with mixer at high speed until foamy (use only grade A clean, uncracked eggs). Gradually add sugar and lemon extract. Beat at high speed until thickened. NOTE: When dry, Royal Icing is very hard and resistant to damage that can occur during shipping/handling

Use Royal Icing. It dries rock hard and is used for 'glue' in baking.

Royal Icing
3 egg whites
1 (16 ounce) package powdered sugar, sifted (about 4 3/4 cups)
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar
In a large mixing bowl combine egg whites, powdered sugar, vanilla, and cream of tarter.
Beat with an electric mixer on high speed for 7 to 10 minutes or till very stiff.
Use at once, covering icing in bowl at all times with wet paper towel to prevent from drying.
You can add flavoring extract to this, if you wish.

The Royal icing recipes are perfect. This stuff dries rock hard ... perfect for building, but not for icing cookies. I portion it out and put it in zip lock bags, then just cut off a corner when ready to "pipe" onto the house. This really helps with the clean up, since, as mentioned, it dries so hard.
