I am a 16 year old girl and I want to be a doctor when I grow up. The only problem is, I can't stand the sight of blood. It makes me feel like throwing up. And once, I even fainted! How can I make my self stand the sight of blood?

Other than surgery, you don't have to encounter a lot of blood in medicine if you don't want to. You'll have to do at about 3 months of surgery and a bit of OB (another bloody area - you won't believe what comes out with the baby!) during medical school, but by that time you'll probably be over the blood thing.

Go for it. You'll find an area of medicine that you feel comfortable with. Maybe neurology, or dermatology, or radiology, or good ol' internal medicine.

Good luck to you!

You are still young, so wait and then see when your older if the sight of blood still bothers you. There are always solutions to phobias and yours is not a hard one to fix.
Believe in the possible, and if you want to be a doctor that badly you will not let anything stand in your way.

Another area of medicine where you NEVER see blood is psychiatry. but if you want to "stand" the sight of blood, do desensititation therapy...it works very well with the worst phobias and is easy to do. Best done with a psychiatrist or psychologist, but you may be able to get a CD.
All the best to you

Well, rather than telling you to never be a doctor, I would suggest perhaps looking into different medical career. Or, if you are a hardcore med. student, you could beign conditioning your self. Try cooking a steak rare, then gradually move on to minor blood. Volunteer at a children's school for a day, there will be plently of practice there. Hopefully this helps.

You can try seeing if it improves over time...maybe you will get used to it.

In the first year of medical school you take a class called Gross Anatomy. You have to dissect a cadaver (dead person), while all of the blood will be coagulated (clumped together), there will still be some.

I would say try to either get used to it or find something in the medical industry where you wouldn't have to deal with blood.

You may become more used to it as you deal with your menstual cycle.

Additionally, Opthamologists deal with small amounts of blood.

Depending on the field, another option is to get a PhD. I did not have to deal with ANY blood in graduate school.
