I think something under $20 is very appropriate and will say, hey, I really like you, instead of hey, I'm ready to settle down, have your kids and buy a minivan with you. Expensive gifts too soon will scare a guy. Get him a shirt that he can work out in, or a cool new cd and gift card with a greeting card.

Try to find out if he uses a local bike shop and see what they might suggest. Tire repair kit or first aid kit comes to mind. New water bottle with candy inside. Trail maps if he doesn't have any.

You could look around his apartment & see if he needs anything obvious (plant, magazine rack, something for the kitchen).

See if he likes books or movies and give him one he might like. Maybe a DVD about the X-games if you can find it or something related to his favorite football team.

Books on areas they do biking (Utah). A bundle of different magazines about things he likes (I did this for a friend that quilts, she loved it).

Get him something that says you understand how he thinks, you recognize his interests, and you want him to continue those interests.

An inexpensive gift is a magazine subscription to a publication that has the same focus as he does. That says you understand him and want him to be happy.

Target the gift to what he has an interest, and even the smallest gift has a huge meaning.

Does he have a bike helmet? You could get him a nice padded/gel seat for his bike... they are actually much more comfortable than the regular ones.

The other option is to get him a gift card to a sporting goods store.

An aero bar, cycling jersey, or helmet from Nashbar.com. Or buy a Lance Armstrong book.

get him a nice sweater.

go to the stores and look around. Hopefully you will have written down his size. That's a nice gift.

and maybe some cologne.

keep your receipt(s) 'cause if the sweater doesn't fit, you can always exchange it later. e.g. gift receipt, he doesn't have to know how much you invested!!
