The absolute best thing you can do for them is to call your veterinarian and schedule a visit to go over basic prenatal care in general, as well as what YOUR dog needs in particular.

That's part of the responsibility that comes with breeding dogs, and will also save you a lot of potential heartache. Complications are commonly seen in dogs who receive no prenatal care during their pregnancy, and not NEARLY as common in dogs who do.

Your DVM and the technicians there will be happy to go over every thing you need to know, and what precautions you need to take to make everything go as smoothly as possible.

What precautions? She is already pregnant so the time for precautions is passed. I am guessing this was an accident???

The risks are certainly there. You have a very young, very small dog who is carrying a litter of puppies when she is practically a puppy herself.

Call the vet and get her checked out.

If these dogs are so very special to you, then PLEASE have them neutered. I am inferring from your question that you have NOT screened these dogs for common health/genetic problems---or even had the female checked before she got pregnant----or the vet would have already answered the questions you are posting here. (So I am back to thinking this was unplanned...)

I don't know the rate of c-sections and maternal death in mini-doxies, but a vet or a good breeder would.

Please find the local dachshund club near you, join and learn about these wonderful little dogs so you can be the educated owner you want to be. (Go to www.akc.org to search for a club.)

Peace.

You need to take your dog to the vet for a pregnancy consultation exam. Make sure you do some reading in a decent dog book about pregnancy and delivery so you will have some questions for your vet and be familiar with any medical terms he/she may use.

1 year old is very young for a dachshund to be having a litter, you do need to be prepared for the very real chance of her needing either assistance delivering the puppies or a C-section. C-sections can cost $700 and up depending on where you live, our local referral/emergency clinic gets $1500 and up. If you don't have the money, you really have no business breeding! And... unless you have an amazing relationship with your vet and your vet does their own emergency calls, no one will do this on any kind of a payment plan - forewarned is forearmed!

Get your little girl into your vet asap for a consultation. Make sure you have the breeding date(s) with you or at least know what day she started her heat cycle (first day she had any blood) so you can best predict when she is due. Listen to your vets advice, ask questions you may have and listen carefully to the answers - take notes if you need to... anything to help you remember the information in the heat of the moment when she goes into labor. My vet has had clients do this before and it sure helps out!

I would try to keep the dogs separate, mainly just because he could damage the puppies by trying to play too rough with her. The gestation in dogs is 63 days (9 weeks, it is about like one month in humans for one week in dogs). When she gets closer to delivery she will start to develop milk in her breasts, and I would start taking her temperature the last week before delivery (her temp will drop to under 99 degrees and stay there about 24 hours prior to delivery). I would go ahead and take her to the vet this week and get her checked out (also, after 6 weeks along you can have her x-rayed to confirm her pregnancy and see how many puppies that she has) and the vet can also answer any questions that you may have. Good Luck!

If your dog was special to you, you would not have allowed her to breed until she was 2 or had 4 seasons.

If the world is special to you, you would have had both animals altered before they were 1.

Why wasn't the female secured during her heat? Are you prepared for the arduous task ahead of you? Got a good vet? Prepared for an emergency middle of the night weekend c-section?

Make an appointment with your vet and find out the appropriate steps that need to be taken to care for both of your animals until the puppies arrive. Don't rely on non-medical people to give you all your answers. Your vet went to school for this. Take her in.

You'll have 2 keep the male away from the female once she has those puppies cause the male will be jealous not meaning to hurt the puppies but he will kill them been in that situation before get the female a box for her & the puppies. Then again he may not but my male did mine had 5 puppies & only has 3 now so I guess it depends.Good Luck

Preganancy in th emini breeds always presents more risks. what you need to do is to take her to the vet. Keep in close contact with your vet.

Doxie have back problems. ( One of mine has lost the use of both of his back legs. His weight caused his back injury. He just moved wrong.) her back will need to be watched while she is preganant. You do know these dogs are nopt suppose to take stair at all or jump or climb don"t you. Not even porch steps. We built ramps for ours.

You should not have any trouble with your boy dog.

Your very , very best bet is talking to a good vet.
