I wash them and brush with a "soft" veggie brush, slice and saute. If you boil before you satue` they will be rubbery. Hint: it's easier to slice them upside down too. There was a time when I did not wash them but, now with the ecoli and all, I wash.

Never wash a mushroom. Wipe it, peel it if it's a tough one, but never wash it.
And if you boil a mushroom and then saute it you'll just make goop!
Saute raw slices in a little butter or olive oil. Don't forget the garlic...

I give them a quick dip in some water. Then wipe clean with a damp paper towel.
Do not boil them first.
Saute with some fresh butter, parsley, garlic and a splash of white wine.

I wash them first, because they have little bits of dirte still in them. Then slice and saute them. But you don't ever want to wash them then put them in the refrigerator for use at a later date. They will rot a lot faster if you do that.
