I was always taught it was axial tilt.

Axial tilt being the inclination angle of a planet's rotational axis in relation to a perpendicular to its orbital plane. The axis is tilted in the same direction throughout a year; however, as the Earth orbits the Sun, the hemisphere tilted away from the Sun will gradually come to be tilted towards the Sun, and vice versa. This effect is the main cause of the seasons.

So why are christians always going on about Jesus being the reason? His birthday wasn't even in December. It was August according to most theologians.

More likely Mary popped the little bugger in Spring. According to the Bible, the shepherds were with their flocks in the hills. That definitely rules out winter unless the critters were feeding on snowballs. Shepherds take the animals to the higher fields in spring and early summer when the grasses are most lush.

It does cause a person to wonder. If they cannot even get Jesus’ birthday correct to within 5 or 6 months (or, the season as you point out), what else are they wrong about?

Because this is the time it's celebrated. I am aware of the Pagan roots. But who's going to change all this?
