People like that are trying to weasel their way in with the "higher ups." They think that they will gain some type of favor or standing. All they are doing is showing their true colors, that of a meddling two-faced snake.

If your supervisor believes this person, you may have to file a complaint against the co-worker. Put down in writing what is happening. If there's anyone else who is being affected by that person, they too should file complaints. When enough documentation exists, then perhaps some form of action can be taken.

Just continue to do your job, take the high road, don't have any more interaction w/this person than absolutely necessary.

Sounds like she's jealous, or otherwise feels inferior. No matter what she does, you should just go about doing your job and being kind to everyone in the office. People will make up their own minds about whether to believe the gossip. Maybe she's just desperate for attention and saying "the news" helps her to get people's ears, if at least for a short time. Why don't you try taking her out to lunch? and if she tries to say anything negative about anyone just change the subject.

Why don't you start a terrible rumor about her and after it circulates for a day or two, take it to your supervisor. Change it just a little when you tell your boss and make it sound like you have first hand knowledge that it's true. See how she feels to be treated that way. Maybe she'll get over you when it all becomes about her.
