Unless you have a BUNCH of money to spend, Get your single engine land Pilot certificate first. Expect to pay $5,000 -8,000 depending on your location. Then go for the helicopter ADD-ON, you will only have to learn
how to fly it and a few rules and regs that pertain to helicopters in too add to your knowledge of them from Private training. The cost will be alot more expensive on a per hour basis. Expect to pay 150-200 hr for the helicopter alone. the CFI (Certified Flight Instructor) will probably demand a bit more than your primary CFI. This way you get to learn both and with out having to pay 40(the min) -60 hrs(more likely) required to train for private. (Plane or Helo.) Depending on your learning style you can expect at least 20 hrs in the helicopter before you will be ready for the check ride. Good luck with your dream! I have a Private, Single engine land certificate and went up in a R-44 trainer, hooked me, now if only I can put a way the funds to pay for the training. Helicopters are fun as he##

a helicopter is very complicated no matter what kind.
a small plane like a Cessna skyhawk are the easiest of aircraft to fly.
you can take lessons at any age but you are 14 when you actually start flying.
My suggestions to you would be to visit aopa.org to find some lesson places near your city.

a fixed winged aircraft is easier to learn to fly. you are looking at a cost of at least 5000.00 maybe a little less maybe a little more.
you will learn in a Cessna 152 fixed landing gear and fairly simple instrument cluster to learn. the saying is that if you can learn to drive a vw bug you can learn to fly a Cessna 152.
as for the rotary winged aircraft I am not that familiar with except
to say it is a far more difficult skill to master.

Ooops, I jumped ahead without reading your information....I am certainly not a teacher, student, or experienced pilot!
It's cool though that you are determined to learn about planes and helicopters...the main reason why this question popped-up to me, is because my Father is and Aircraft Scholar in Italy, My Grandfather is was also a co-pilot in Italy, during his earlier years...I do wish they were here so they could provide me with much clearer information to give to you...hope my answer doesn't bother you much...*wink*

My community college offers pilot license courses, so check your nearest school and see what they offer. Also if you have a small airport near you, you can call them up to see if they offer any flying lessons, and see what they cost.

Also the military is also a place you could learn to fly (and get paid for it).

Plane is easier and less expensive.Remember though flying is an expensive sport as well to do it for a liviing. Cost isabout 65.00 per hr. instructer 40.00 per hr. That is about as low as it goes.

Not being funny and it is a big committment, join the airforce or all of the other military services have air wings. They train their pilots for free, TIC, only years of your life. But truely, many commercial pilots started out that way.

Helicopters are much harder to fly, and my experience has been that if you desire to fly rotary craft, you should focus on that as opposed to flying fixed wing first then transitioning to rotary, as some of the flight concepts are distinctly different.
