My male black lab has been mopey for the past 2 days. I thought at first he was mopey because I had reprimanded him for getting loose and running around (which was my fault ultimately) but anyway...but today he was still mopey and I was petting and loving him when I noticed he's got a distended belly. I wouldn't say it's "extremely distended, but it's noticeable..I have an appointment with the vet but not till tomorrow at 4pm. I'm worried he might have a blockage. Has anyone had this happen?..what could it be? Any vets reading this? Any ideas would be appreciated.
Again...we ARE going to the vet.

check this link for any symptoms of bloat. If you see any of them, call the vet and RUN!!!
Otherwise, keep the dog calm and quiet. Make sure you get a tox screen so you know if he got to anything like antifreeze or rat poison. I hope your pup is okay, I am sure you are pretty scared right now- prayers 4 u and your pup- dd

I just saw your last post, please take your dog to the vet asap. If it is not bloat, I am still worried him toxic edibles, etc. PLEASE let us know how things are going! dd

EDIT: JUST READ MOST RECENT POST. CALL VET ASAP. GET VET'S AFTER HOURS SERVICE IF NECESSARY. PLEASE.

Did you tell the vet he was mopey and had a distended belly?

Call them again and repeat everything you just wrote here and ask to have the VET call you back and tell you not to worry and why this can wait until 4pm tomorrow. If the dog has been mopey for 2 days, don't let the person answering the phone make the decision to wait.

This is not a slam against vet techs, receptionists or anyone else in a vet office....I just think that if the vet believes that the appointment can wait until tomorrow at 4, the vet can explain WHY.

If YOU can't take the dog in until 4pm, find out the earliest you can drop the dog off in the am and leave the dog there and have the vet call you as soon as he/she looks at the dog.

Call and make arrangements. You might regret it if you don't.
Best wishes.

You shouldn't wait to go to the vet. It could be torsion and that is deadly. What that means is that the stomach flips over so to speak and blocks off all blood circulation to the intestines and such. Usually this doesn't last as long as you say your dog has not been feeling well but this kind of thing is nothing to wait on.
It could also be caused by heartworms or round worms as well.
You didn't mention how old your dog is but I wouldn't wait.
Gosh I am so fortunate that my vets do not do appointments and that I can go in anytime during their office hours and get care whether it be routine or emergency. They are also on call 24/7 so I can run down there after calling and they will meet me...
Good Luck!

I wouldn't wait until tomorrow if he is acting sick, I almost lost a dog to a blockage. Emergency vets are open all night long. If he is acting fine then it can probably wait, but if he was loose he could also have eaten something that he shouldn't have.

He could possibly have torsion and or bloat, which is the turning of the intestines. He does need to be to the vet, the sooner the better. Good Luck

Probably intestinal parasites. it could be a blockage or a twisted stomach but most likely not. keep your appointment with the vet and be ready to have possible bloodwork, x-rays, etc.

I would get him to an emergency vet right away.It sounds like bloat or liver disease. My GSD had bloat, and even though I took him to the vet,he deteriorated very quickly and had to be euthanized. So I would suggest you go right now!

Is he in pain, urinating, drinking, eating, panting, pooping? Those answers would lead to whether he needs to go to the ER.
