Then later, they genuinely asked for forgiveness. They were truly repentent. What would happen to them?

As an edit and to give more detail. Biblical references I know of do not refer to blasphemy as never repenting of your sins. Here are the verses I am referring to:
Therefore I say to you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven men. Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man, it will be forgiven him; but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit, it will not be forgiven him, either in this age or in the age to come (Matthew 12:31-32).
Assuredly, I say to you, all sins will be forgiven the sons of men, and whatever blasphemies they may utter; but he who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness, but is subject to eternal condemnation—because they said, “He has an unclean spirit” (Mark 3:28-30).
And anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man, it will be forgiven him; but to him who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit, it will not be forgiven (Luke 12:10).

Privratnik – Sound reasoning. My question was generated by Saul/Paul. Perhaps at the time, he did not truly understand the nature of salvation and therefore did not reject it completely - did not intentionally cause others to reject salvation.

You have to understand what it means to "Blaspheme the Holy Spirit."

In order to do that, you'd have to have a complete understanding of the nature of salvation, reject it completely, and intentionally attempt to cause others to reject salvation. Not that you, yourself would be deceived, but that you knew the truth yet chose to deceive others.

Such a sin would require a great deal of dedication. It would require a true hatred of the Almighty God and the people he created. I don't think such a person would ever change his mind.

Adam and Eve are both answering this question: we've the suited answer. IS THERE AN UNFORGIVABLE SIN? "each and every sin or blasphemy must be forgiven - except blashphemy hostile to the Holy Spirit, that may by no skill be forgiven." (Matthew 12:31) Blasphemy hostile to the Holy Spirit is termed an unforgivable sin. the reason that is unforgivable is because it reflects a 'settled, hardhearted attitude of defiant hostility' in the route of God. someone who has that attitude will by no skill come to God for forgiveness - so this kind of sin is unforgivable. once you're apprehensive about no matter if you've committed the unforgivable sin, this is quite unlikely. note TO NEIL S: we are quite confident you've committed the unforgivable sin, Neil. Too undesirable for you!

Any sin sincerely repented is forgiven. But here's the catch - blaspheming the Holy Spirit doesn't just mean uttering a curse word against Him or something like that. It means kicking Him out of your life, closing yourself off from His influence and His grace. Unfortunately, repentence happens only in response to His grace. Therefore if you close yourself to the Holy Spirit's influence in your life, you close yourself to the possibility of repenting, and therefore to the possibility of being forgiven. That's why absolute blasphemy of the Holy Spirit is unforgiveable.

That is one sin that strikes terror into the heart of Christians. I think because one is never really sure what it means. Plus, people will tell you different versions of what it means. I heard a Pastor say that Blasphemy against the Holy Spirit is to reject Christ. You can not be forgiven for rejecting the one and only way to God. However, I wouldn't talk bad about the Holy Spirit in case this guy is wrong.

Blasphemy of the Holy Spirit IS never repenting of your sins. The only way you cannot be forgiven is if you never ask for forgiveness. Therefore, you cannot be sorry for not asking for forgiveness because that would thus be asking for forgiveness and you wouldn't have blasphemed the Holy Spirit.

If you speak "against" something that means you're refuting it. If your refuting something you disagree with it's claims. The Holy Spirit is infused within everyone and anyone who believes on and in Jesus Christ. It cannot be otherwise. Therefore, speaking against the Holy Spirit is just refusing to allow it to come inside of your heart AFTER you've been forgiven.

I don't believe that blasphemy of the Holy Spirit can be lightly or carelessly engaged in. It is an extremely serious transgression that would be reflective of a truly reprobate mind toward God. God is neither unfair nor unmerciful--and He alone knows the heart. Therefore, He alone knows in which exact instances the unpardonable sin has been committed. While we might suspect someone of having committed this sin, it isn't something we can ever really be completely sure of, since we cannot see the person's heart--only God can.

Jesus gave us the equation, sin = death. All those who speak down to God will get to “enjoy” suffering and death until the sin is paid for. It could take a very long time. The self-imposed hell on the sinner will be as a reality and will remain, until God lifts them from it. Sin is punished as long as it remains. Asking for forgiveness does not remove the penalty due for sin, but the destruction of sin is the true sign of repentance, and removes the sentence.

What part of "Unforgiveable" is so hard to understand? God's Word says what It means and means what IT says! Unforgiveable means unforgiveable and God does not lie, cheat, or back up or back off of His Word. PEACE!!!

do not ask the christian god for an answer - forgiveness lies within, and only that soul (that thinks they have sinned) can accept redemption if they let redemption be a part of themselves - you cannot sin against yourself
