We like a very clean, simple look, but are trying to get the wow factor out of the custom cabinets we are having built. The appliances are stainless still and the faucet is going to be brushed nickel. The floor in the kitchen will be a medium color wood. There are 6 windows in the kitchen, so the kitchen getting dark will not be a problem. Any help if this will look good or any other ideas of a different color granite would help.

A black granite always works well with cherry cabinets. This is close to the same design scheme I have in my home, and I absolutly adore it. You're also being smart with putting in so many windows. That's the only complaint I have about ours. We didn't put in enough, so sometimes it can seem very dark.

I do somewhat agree that a lighter-color floor would help keep the kitchen from looking too dark, but I'd caution you against going too light. A room with dark on top and light below looks unbalanced and top-heavy, almost upside-down! Since you have dark cherry cabinets (gorgeous, I bet!) I'd pick a flooring just a few ticks lighter than the cabinets, but still in the cherry tones. They would still blend with the lower cabinets, and that would lend itself to a feeling of openness. I'd worry that a MUCH lighter tone on the floors would be too much contrast, which would make the space feel closed in. Keep in mind, too, that you can do a lot with lighting and paint. I personally like very dark finishes on cabinets and counters. I have black countertops, too (not granite ... I WISH!), and I absolutely love them. Good luck on your project!

I would not do a black granite with dark cabinets. You should chose something that is a bit brighter so your cabinets and countertops stand out one from the other. There are great selections and I would also check out a new product called Sile Stone. It's great and they have gorgeous colors! Good luck with your remodel!

I did something similar and used a light colored hardwood flooring. My counter tops were green granite and the cabs cherry. It came out great. I have photos if you are interested. Having the wood flooring in the kitchen has a tendenacy to reduce breakage if you drop something and looks great as well. Also costs are usually not to bad because kitchen floor space is generally smaller than normal rooms. Go ahead and Email me and I will send you some photos of my remodel. PS I used some string lighting under the upper cabinet lip and under the lower cabinet lip just off the floor. Great night lighting which allows you to move around the kitchen without blinding yourself and it looks really cool too.

I am a contractor specializing in luxury homes and i have seen this combo a hundred times and it looks great, keep in mind that the cherry will darlen considerably over time ...not to worry it will look even better,then.....if you you are concerned about things being too dark ...they wont ...but if it bugs you ,you can fix the issue by adding some brushed nickel pulls to your cabinetry, stick with the black granite maybe with silver or gold flecks to it,and do not go with silestone ,every home owner who we have had it put infor hates it as it is not a durable as granite,it burns if you put a hot pot on ot , it shows knife marks if you cut on it etc. granite looks better and is much more user friendly.

From experience, I can suggest staying away from black granite unless you like to dust daily. It drove me completely nuts. There was dust on the counters every day. The only time they look good is when they are polished! Even if you wipe a spill with a towel, you have to polish the spot or you can see the smear. Go with a neutral color. You'll be a lot happier in the long run!
