We are all screwed up...that's why we need forgiveness. Don't worry about different kinds of sins, just let God love you and show you His grace.

A mortal sin is a sin which your fully conscious of committing. It can be anything from premeditated murder to premeditated lying. You lose grace and separate yourself from God until confessing it and repenting of it.

A venial sin is sin committed without you knowing you committed any sin.

A "screw-up" hardly describes committing a mortal sin because you didn't, in essence, "screw-up". That suggests you didn't know you committed it and would thus be venial. But to answer your question if you knowingly commit a mortal sin and die before you could repent you'd be in pretty bad shape. Only God can deal with you. The Catholics say no, you'd go to Purgatory and the Protestants would say yes because Jesus already payed for that sin.

A mortal sin is the type of sin described by St. John in his epistle, which leads to the "death" of the soul ... a complete lack of sanctifying grace.

A venial sin is a serious offense, but one that is less severe, and not in itself sufficient to cause one to lose all sanctifying grace.

Objectively, departing this life with an unforgiven and unrepented mortal sin on one's soul could be sufficient to land someone in hell for eternity.

Subjectively, there are many factors that might be taken into account which could lessen the severity of what would have been a mortal sin, and still allow someone to eventually be admitted to heaven.

Jesus has been appointed as both our advocate and our judge in these matters.

Trust in him ... and pray that his mercy exceeds his justice!

The New Testament distinguishes between sin three different ways: venial sins (although not called such), sins "that lead to death" (1 John 5:16-17) (Mortal sins) and the unforgivable sin, blasphemy against the Holy Spirit (Mark 3:28-29

Mortal sin and venial sin are clearly described in the Bible, which is no surprise since the Bible was compiled by the Catholic Church, which allowed nothing except Catholic teaching to be included. Consider what "mortal" and "venial" mean. Your dictionary will tell you that "mortal" means "leading to death". If a soldier on the battlefield receives a "mortal wound" we know that the wound led to his death. "Venial" means "easily forgiven".

Now, consider John 1:5:16-17 ... "If anyone sees his brother committing a sin not leading to death, he shall ask and God will for him give life to those who commit sin not leading to death. There is a sin leading to death; I do not say that he should make request for this. All unrighteousness is sin, and there is a sin not leading to death."

Now, to paraphrase this passage ... "If anyone sees his brother committing a sin that is not mortal, simply ask God to forgive him and the sin will be forgiven" [it is "easily forgiven" - "venial"]. "There are also mortal sins. I do not say you should pray for forgiveness in this case". [Something more is required for forgiveness of such serious sins - sacramental confession.] "All unrighteousness is sin, but some sins are not mortal".

venial sin is a small non grave threatening sin. these can be confessed atleast once a year,if you can do it more then that is cool but not neccessary, if you have venial sin you need to cleanse yourself of that sin. mortal sin condemns you, if you are aware of commiting a mortal sin you should repent and confess immediately or as soon as possible. if you are not aware of the sin then you should be fine as you are not consciously aware of having commited a sin. mortal sin would be sin such as murder, rape, adultery etc..... teachings of the church indicate that if you die in mortal sin you will not inherit the kingdom, with venial sin you may inherit the kingdom but may need to be cleansed in a temporary state of punishment known as purgatory. that is the understanding as taught, for each person i would assume gods judgement will be different but we must do our best to attain our salvation. god bless, scripturecatholic.com will give you some helpful information on this and other issues you are confused or just want answers to.

The only way to heaven is Jesus Christ and asking for forgiveness of your sins. The Bible does say that The only sin that is not forgiven is blasphemy against the Holy Spirit.

The difference is completely unimportant. The bible teaches that ANY sin deserves eternal death. Confessing, repenting and accepting Jesus is the only way to be saved from the consequence.

The good news is that, according to 1 John 1:9, "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness."

Mortal sin is Catholic, and since you can't get to heaven through Catholic theology anyway then it doesn't matter.

Try Jesus Christ, there is no mortal sin, and all you need to get to heaven is to believe in Him and confess Him as your Lord.
