A traditional martini involves olives, vermouth, and gin. Basically just tastes like strong hard liquor with a VERY distinct taste of the olive juice. Generally, martinis are always strong because they are mostly just liquor. Not usually sweet or sour at all. However, there are other versions of martinis, like vodka martinis, which are usually just like flavored vodkas mixed. For example, an apple martini is apple liquor and vodka. Those are slightly more sweet, obviously because of the apple, however, they are still stronger than a mixed drink. Sometimes places will have a HUGE variety of martinis, because there really are as many as you can possibily think of. Where I live, it's very trendy right now, so there are a lot of martini bars which will offer probably about 20 types or more. (take a basic apple martini, and jazz it up with some carmel sauce, and fun sugar around the rim of the glass) Check local places for specials, or search the web to get ideas.

Technically a Martini is simply vodka or gin, chilled and served with an olive or onion. A sweet or dry martini is the difference of putting vermouth in your martini or not. Sweet=vermouth, dry= no vermouth. There are so many different twists and flavors to the martini. Try to find a local martini bar that offers a wide variety on their menu. Good luck.

a true martini is 2 parts Good dry gin to one part dry vermouth with a couple of big green olives on a spike, a variant is the Vodka martini which has 2 parts of a great vodka like absolut or ketel one, mixed with one part of dry vermouth. Now there are literally hundreds of variations. The popular one right now is the sour apple martini. it is made from this recipe:
2 oz citrus vodka preferably a good one like Skyy
1/2 oz Sour Apple Pucker schnapps
1/2 oz orange liqueur or triple sec
3/4 oz fresh lemon juice
Bottoms up!.

A martini is a mixed drink; the "basic" martini is made with gin and dry vermouth; I personally don't care for them, but some people swear by them.
There are about a million recipes out there. Try the link below.

A traditional martini is gin, dry vermouth, and olive. If you are not a gin drink you can use vodka. If you are going to try one go top shelf. Cheap liquer makes a disquisting martini. If you don't like hard liquer staight up try a sour apple martini

A martini is vodka or gin with vermouth. It is generally garnished with a green olive. They are stronger than others think. I don't drink them.
