CD-R and DVD-R are disc that you can only write once.
CD-RW and DVD-RW can be written about 1000 times. CD-R/RW can contains about 650 to 700 MB of datas. DVD-R/RW can contains about 4.4 GB of data for a single-sided disc.

CD-RW - " " Re-writer/re-writable
DVD-R and DVD+R are the same a DVD Recorder/ writer (Best for videos/ movies)

CD-R are just writable once, as CD-RW are erasable.

I am sure the same standard for DVD R and RW.

CD-RW = CD Rom Rewritable

DVD +/- =DVD Rom
