The first thing you must realize is that once a tree is cut down, it is dead and the only thing you can do is to prevent it shedding its needles too fast. (Some people have small trees with root balls in buckets of earth and bring them out and plant them in the garden after Christmas. You can do that if you have a big yard, but it is a little more effort. Dig the hole it will go into first, so you are not trying to dig when the ground is frozen.)

If you have a cut tree, make sure the stand you use is the kind that will hold the cut end suspended in water. And keep water in the container. A tree will absorb as much as a quart of water a day and pass it into the air. Not only does it make the house smell nice, but if you keep it watered, the tree will be less flammable, in case of any problems. Put an aspirin into the water, that will help to prevent any fungus growing in the water.

The main thing is, don’t use candles on the tree. Use electric lights only, and if you can find the battery-operated LED lights, they are even safer. If the cat climbs up and knocks down the tree. Battery operated lights will not cause a fire.

Just for fun, try popping corn and threading the popped kernels on a thread with a sewing needle. You can also string cranberries that way, if you use a strong needle and are careful.

Merry Christmas!

A couple of weeks tops-I always put a bit of sugar in with the fresh water everyday. That helps it to keep it's needles longer.

Water (never let it go dry) sugar (about a quarter cup per gallon) and aspirin (one every three days).
