When the U.S. is much wealthier (guaranteed free education to all under 18 here) than both those countries (especially India)?

I work with a young woman who has the equivalent of a masters degree here in the US.
Their education is much more concentrated than what you will find here.
Fro instance, when my grandmother graduated from the 8th in 1930, she had what was equivalent to a high school education in 1976.
She is from Russia, has been here for 10 years and is one of the most wonderful people I have had the pleasure to know.

I know the quality of knowledge the students are getting is much higher (in those countries) and they focus in on many subjects going into the levels (during middle & high school) where they only start introducing at College/University level in the US. For example they start teaching calculus in 9th grade (in many non-western foreign countries such as the ones you have listed), where most US teenagers have no clue about algebra. This just an example to let you know how big of a difference there is. There is also the factor of better discipline. Students have more respects to teachers, their parents and values are not as degenerated as they are here in US. Also government pay for college education, (there is a very minimal fee for undergrad level education in Universities). The consequences are very obvious when you do not have a decent education in those countries which is the bitter truth of enemployment. There are even countries in Asia where people with a 4 year degree can't find a job. In US it is easy to find a job as long as you hold a high school diploma (I'm talking about entry level positions) It is better if you have a 4 year degree and much better with a grad degree. It is not the case in those countries such as India, Russia and many others. People work harder for money and they are fully aware that smn else will get the job if they are not good enough. There is that factor of great competition and the need to survive. So that is also why people in those countries are more ambitious because they know what it is like to not have the kind of priviledges we take for granted here in US in our daily lives: such as hot running water, electricity, puplic transportation, ability to call 911 during an emergency and knowing they will arrive in a matter of minutes. Education is also better in Japan (and they are not as poor as India either) but I think that has more to do with pure self discipline of the whole society over the years. So the basic reason boils down to discipline (wherever there is discipline there will be solid results).

The reason educatoin is better in those countries is very possibly that we are wealthier here. Since our quality of life is so much higher and school is a given, we don't appreciate its importance as a society. Because of this, students (and unfortunately teachers) slack off, teachers are underpaid, and of course all of the other problems in our educational system are compounded. In other countries, people don't have the almost guaranteed quality of life we have here. Because of this they push their educations to the limit to ensure they have a successful future. The education systems are much more specialized, and behavior problems are less prevalent.

We spend a lot of money on our education system, but it still isn't very good. Several other countries do better on international tests than the U.S. does.

because much to the liberals and teachers unions' dismay, $ does not equal better education.

We spend sooo much time on stuff like self esteem and letter writing projects to save the rain forest that it cuts into subjects like math, science and reading.

The result is that other nations test better than we do on objective standardized tests. They read better, they know more math and they understand more science.

I believe it is because they focus more on math and science and really go beyond the basics. Our public schools in the US are not demanding at all in these areas. You may notice that alot of Indians are either doctors or engineers.
