Not every soldier in the Wehrmacht, the German Army, was a Nazi. If he was a Nazi and has blood on his hands, he is probably not going to tell you anyway. If the subject comes up and you see photos, look for two lightning bolt SS on the uniform lapel. If the subject does not come up, don't push it. You are dating the girl, not the grandfather. Oh yeah, there is no need to rent Band of Brothers and watch it at her family's house over the holidays either, however tempting that might be. Playing Medal of Honor on your laptop is probably OK though.

Unless the grandfather belonged to the top officials, he is unlikely to be a hardcore Nazi. Much of the youths who participated in the war was brainwashed by the Nazi propoganda of Hitler. Much like the soldiers from Japan, they sincerely believed that there were fighting for the good of their country, much like the American soldiers in Iraq or Afganistan. One should not put too much blame on them, but at the leaders for they were the ones making the decisions

The grandfather of a good friend of mine served in the German army during WW2. She has a portrait of him in uniform in her home, complete with swastika. She is, needless to say, utterly opposed to naziism. He was a soldier in a time of war wearing the uniform of his country. If the grandfather is a good man, it doesn't matter in what way he served his country. If he is a vicious racist bigot, it wouldn't matter if he didn't put on a German uniform. We don't get to choose the country we are born in.

He probably was. It doesn't mean he is still. People do change their minds about things.
