www.annualcreditreport.com is the way to go. As an additional step, I suggest you get some information about credit scores, how to improve them, and how to make sure yours doesn't contain any errors. I have a couple of articles I found on a finance blog, you might want to look at them :

Credit is a numbers game. The better educated you are about it, the better off you are managing it well.

All the three main sites will charge you to look up your credit score. Some credit card companies (Providian, Washington Mutual) provide their credit score to their credit card customers.

You can get a good estimate of your credit score on myfico.com or bankrate.com. Look up credit score estimator.

Remember that there is more than one credit score; fico, tri-merge is one that most mortgage companies use which provides all three.

You can go to www.annualcreditreport.com and get your credit report FREE once each year from each of the top 3 credit reporting agencies (TransUnion, Experian and Equifax). Now, this is only your credit REPORT, not your score. Once you have your report, you can pay about $5 to get your score.
