A physician orders 2gms of an antibiotic to be placed in 1000ml of D5W. Using a constituted injection that contains 300mg/2ml, how many mls should be added to the IV solution?

This is an easy calculation, but if you're having trouble, it's probably because the units (grams and milligrams don't match up). If it is easier for you, first convert 300 mg to grams. Remember a 1000 mg = 1 g. So you have 0.3 g =300 mg.

Do unit analysis for the rest of the problem. Grams cancel out grams and you are left with ml.

13.33 to be exact, but you have to round to 13 to be practical.

2 g x (2 ml/0.3 g)=13.3 ml
