The truth about the Quran is as follows:

Muhammad had a bad childhood (his father died before he was born, his mother sent him off to live with nonrelatives, and his uncle and cousins stole his birthright (inheritance) and he was a pagan).

Muhammad had a bad adulthood (being poor he had to go to work for a woman (in a male dominated world) much older than him. He later married her. His only sons died earlier (there is no proof that he killed them in a religious act to a pagan god) and so did his first (of many) wives).

Muhammad when he was older took to staying in a cave. In the cave he had a "revelation" from an entity that did not identify itself (a Christian nonblood relative is the one that said it had to be the Angel Gabriel - then the nonblood relative suddenly died).

Muhammad would preach to the poor and slaves. There is no doubt that he was charismatic speaker (like Hitler, Napolian, and others). Soon he had a following of educated people. Muhammad became materialistic and started increasing his wealth (including wars).

After Muhammad died, the 3rd Caliph Uthman decided to standardize the Quran. He formed a committee that collected written and memorized verses from Muhammad's speeches or causual conversations. The committee put together the current version of the Quran. Then anything that was written about Muhammad or what he had said was destroyed.

Upon the pain of death, no muslim can revise or add to the Quran. However, some scholars realizing the shortcomings of the Uthman version have added "clarifications" of the nonarabic versions. If you look at an English translation of the Quran, you will find words and phrases within brackets.

For example, the pilgrimage to Mecca (a pagan ritual from pre-islam) is not specifically mentioned. The Quran says that a believer should make at least one religious journey but the name [Mecca] is enclosed in brackets.
Now is this an accident or did the fact that Uthman's family controlled most of the area around Mecca have any bearing on the addition of Mecca to the text?

So who did the physical writing down of the Quran? Most definitely the Uthman commissioned committee (who from all known information were NOT visited by an entity in a cave).

Unfortunately, the myths about the Quran being perfect are just that myths.

And there is not independent verification that what is written in the QURAN is what muhammad said!

And yes you can keep the Quran without change if you kill anyone who tried to change it and you destroy ALL contrary versions.

However, there are rumors that during World War One, the British army discovered what was determined to be the only Quran written down while Muhammad was alive. It is rumored that Muhammad's wife Hafsa UMAR had it and because of her status (being one of his wives) was able to keep it from being destroyed by Uthman's henchmen. The interesting aspect of this story is that prior to being married to Muhammad, Umar was supposed to marry Uthman, but he refused to marry her. So it is possible that Hafsa (meaning Young Lioness) Umar had TWO reasons to go against Uthman:

To protect what her husband Muhammad actually said (verses what Uthman claims he said) and to get back at him (a woman scorned and all that)

Allegedly, the British offered it to the Saudis after World War 2 in exchange for exclusive oil deals and the Saudis' promise that the Umar Quran be preserved. The Saudis allegedly refuse BOTH conditions so the British have retained it.

Again, this is all rumors, but so is the entire Uthman version!

Utheman made up the Quran. The oldest Quran in existance was written four hundred years after the death of Muhammad. Considering how sacred and revered the Quran is to Muslims, it stands to reason that any Quran, written at or around the time of Muhammad, would have been preserved without a scratch, to this day. Thus the Quran was made-up by some person hundreds of years after Muhammad.

The Quran was not "written". It is the word of Allah. Allah (god) would send these ayat (verses) to Prophet Mohammed (pbuh) in variouse way (in P. Mohammed's dreams, through the ANgel Jibreel, etc.). P. Mohammed being Illiterate (couldn;t read or write) would then recite these verses to his companians and friends who then would write these verses down. That is why the Quran is considered a miracle, because it was sent down to P. Mohammed who was Illiterate and couldn't possibly have made it up.

One thing that springs to mind about its writing is that it specifically states that it must only be written in Arabic (as obviously God must speak Arabic like Muhammed). And if this is from God then it must be adhered to by anyone who truly believes what is written in it.

Yet muslims all around the world read it in other languages.

If you're a Muslim, then God wrote it; if not, I guess you could attribute it to Mohammad.

It was written (or revealed) in the 6th Century AD over a period of many years.

Since Mohammed was illiterate, the Koran was apparently dictated to a scribe or scribes. Some say it was scribed by a Catholic Priest imprisoned for his faith, and deliberately mis-translated to create confusion and vagueness.

But, that's just a story i heard long ago.

Thank you for asking about Islam and the Quran. All seekers of truth are invited to offer their questions about Islam, the world's fastest growing religion, and all that it teaches. It is based on the teachings of the Holy Quran and as such it is our distinguished pleasure to offer the following information about the heart and soul of Islam; The Holy Quran.

First of all, even though the prophet, peace be upon him, did not read or write, it was recorded and written down during his life. He had a dozen or so of those who memorized Quran from him, write it down on various mediums, including animal skins (leather), bark and palm leaves. He then rehearsed it with them over and over even up until his passing away. Three of the actual Qurans printed in the time of the companions of Muhammad, peace be upon him, exist today and they are exactly as we do recite them today.

Second, we are pleased to tell you, the Quran was recorded in the hearts and minds of more than 10,000 men and women while the prophet, was still alive. He rehearsed it over and over with his companions day after day and in its entirety from cover to cover, out loud, every Ramadhan (lunar month of Muslim calendar).

Third, you need not be concerned about the honesty and integrity of those people who preserved the Quran in their hearts. The veracity of each and every single one of these people (called companions of the prophet) has been attested to and they were all known for having memorized and related the Quran exactly the same as each other. They totally memorized it just as people do today, from mouth to ear and in the exact manner of recitation. This is in itself, an amazing thing. No other book on earth has ever had such distinction in this area.

Fourth, there is no other book on earth like the Quran. Its style and prose in the Arabic language is unmatched for 14 centuries. The prophecies, predictions, scientific evidences, ease of memorization and ability to comprehend is beyond compare.

Fifth, you safely put your mind to rest on this subject of preservation of the Holy Quran, because of its presence with us even today, throughout the entire world. Today every single living Muslim (over 1 billion) has memorized some portion of the Quran in the original Arabic language that it came in, just as the people memorized it over 1,400 years ago. And amazingly enough, over 9 million men, women and children have the entire Quran in their hearts and can recite it for you from cover to cover.

Allah Himself, has promised to preserve the Quran until the Last Days. And He has.

It is the only book on earth that, if you destroyed every book on earth, we would be able to bring it back exactly as it was, every single letter from cover to cover, by the permission of Allah.

These are facts.

The Quran of today can be easily checked by Muslims anywhere on the earth. And there can be no doubt in the mind of any Muslim whether or not what is being recited here in India is the same as what is being recited in Arabia or Africa or in the USA for that matter.

You are most welcome to review the facts and consider for yourself. The Quran makes claims within itself to its own authenticity:

* "This is the Book (Qur'an) wherein there is no doubt."
*"Have not the unbelievers considered that if it were from other than Allah, it would contain many contradictions?"
* "Allah shall show them the Signs within themselves and on the farthest horizons."
* "If you are in doubt about it, bring a book like it."

To date, none have been able to produce anything even close to the Quran in beauty, style, meaning and prophecies. The scientific proofs and evidences make the Quran the most talked about book in the intellectual world today.
