Probably equal. Both sides had enough nukes to make the other weapons unnecessary.

My father worked for defense contractors for most of the "Cold War". It was pretty much common knowledge that the Soviet Union had superior numbers of conventional weapons, but that the US and its allies had better quality.

There would be plenty of info available in publications of the time. It was often theorized that if the Soviets invaded western Europe that they would easily win a conventional war, and that the west would have no choice but to use nuclear weapons in response. Whether this would have been true or not will never be known.

Enough to keep up.
the U.S. had so many spies that the U.S. would know the production of the Soviet Union. the Soviet union was the same to the U.S. so every 1 thing the Soviets produced, the U.S. produced too. Every one thing the U.S. produced, the USSR produced too.

it was until the Regan Administration when Regan thought up a crazy plan (but worked very well), to produce SO much weapons that the Soviets would not be able to keep up would cause themselves to self destruct economically.

I served ten years on that border facing the Soviets.
12 tanks to everyone of ours
25 planes to everyone of ours
Equal numbers of ships
4 subs to each one of ours, but many of them were diesel
17 artillery pieces to everyon of ours
Training was minimal
Quantity was 4.5 to 6 million men facing 300,000 of us (ouch)
Quality was in serious doubt, but face with 13 to 1 odds..... how good do they have to be anyway?

Nukes? who cares...... when they drop (and we would have dropped on Tac Nukes on Day Three by the way) we all lose anyway......

For giggles though..... each side had enough Nukes to make every spot on the planet a warm and comfortable 1500 degrees Fahrenheit for a very long time.

You forgot two things however
Nerve Agents & Bio Toxins
........ the Soviets practiced every day on how to supposedly travel through areas of contamination........

Heres the rub though, they were the only ones who had them and had soldiers manning equipment that could spread it.
BioToxins
