Each hole on a course has a set score that you are supposed to get (par). It should take either 1, 2, or 3 shots to get to the green and 2 more to putt it in, so holes are either par 3, 4, or 5 depending on the length. Your raw score is just the number of strokes (number of times you hit the ball, plus any penalties) For each hole, if you get a birdie, you did one better than par (instead of getting it in in 4 shots, it took you 3) and bogey is the opposite (instead of getting it in in 4 shots, it took you 5) Eagle is 2 shots under par, double bogey is 2 over par. So a course with 18 holes usually has 4 par 3s, 4 par 5s, and the rest par 4s for a total of 72 (that varies). If you shoot 75, you are 3 over par. The average golfer shoots around 100 everytime they go out, so be patient and practice your short game!

I would disagree with the opinion that you cannot get a 1 on a par 4 - but that is beside the point. Apart from understanding par, birdie etc, when you play regualrly you record your score every time you play, and then you get issued a handicap. This is the average number of strokes over the par for the course that it takes you to get around in. So for example, if the par for the course is 72 and you get around in 90, then you are 18 over par. If you consistently shoot 18 over, you would be awarded a handicap of 18. Then when you play in competitions, you are allowed to deduct some or all of your handicap from your total score. Using this mechanism, players of all abilities can compete together and have an equal chance of winning. As you get better your handicap will lower, and eventually you would become a scratch golfer, which means you can play any course in par. Good luck and keep practising

Hello gunner
The lower you score in golf the better.
All courses are set up on par for that course, depending on the layout and how many of each hole (par 3, par 4, par 5) the par for the course is normally 70 - 72.
Par 3s need to be made in 3 shots
Par 4s in 4 shots
Par 5s in 5 shots
If you shoot 1 under par it is a birdie
2 under par is an eagle
1 over par is a bogey
2 over par is a double bogey
3 over par is a triple bogey
Example :::: if you shoot a 4 on a par 3 you had a bogey
Most golfers shoot double bogey golf (allthought they may not admit it :) )
I hope this helps, if you need more info just email me.

It could. If you are a good putter, then you are a good putter. The difference is, you are using a completely different ball and putter. In mini golf, both the ball and the putter weigh less than real golf equipment does. In addition to that, putting only makes up approximately one third of your strokes in a round of golf. If you can't hit the ball straight with your driver or your irons, then you still aren't going to have a really low score no matter how good you putt.

Big boss LtGolf has got it right. You will pick these terms up very quickly by playing golf games. Try Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2007. Its a great game and it will help you pick up your "lingo" for the next time you are out there on the course. Good luck. Hope this helps some. Happy Holidays.

an ace is when you hole the ball in just one stroke
when you hole the ball in two less then designatedy no of strokes its an eagel.
you can get an eagle on par 4 s and par 5s only
when you hole the ball in one less then designatedy no of strokes its a birdy
when you hole the ball in the exact no of strokes as designated for that hole its a par
One stroke over par is a bogey and two over par is a double bogey and the bogeys go on to make a never ending train :-0

Ltgolfer has got it covered! Only thing I would add is the very rare Albatross. This is 3 under par.
