Before you invest your time, make sure you meet the physical requirements for the department you are trying to enter. If you're too short, you're really out of luck. Nothing you can do. If you're too fat, you can fix that. If you can't meet the vision requirements, sometimes you can wear eyeglasses. Sometimes you can have eye surgery, but some departments won't allow that. Some departments don't allow smokers and that's GREAT as far as I'm concerned (Orange County Sheriff).

You got to make sure you can pass the physical agility tests before you spend your time planning to become a Police Officer. Make sure you're also in the correct age bracket.

Start running and working out as soon as you can.

Be prepared for a military-like training enviornment (can't spell right now) and don't be offended when they yell and spit in your face and tell you to run faster and do more, and more pushups. You've ususally got to be able to jump over a six-foot wall wearing a 26 pound belt of equipment.

And be prepared to lose friends, gain friends, have relationships worn out to the extreme, and be the fall-guy when it comes to arguments on the street. Sometimes "nobody likes a cop" and you'll go home mad at the world.

Don't let em' get you down. If you shoot and kill someone to help someone else, at least you'll be going home safe to YOUR family. And THAT'S the way it should be, and SCREW Al Sharpton, Jessie Jackson, Farrakhan, and all of those other pro-criminal, anti-cop aholes.

I can go into paragraphs about what you need to become a peace officer in the State of California. Rather than do that, I am going to refer you to the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) website.

http://www.post.ca.gov/selection/

There you will find all the information for job applicants, information for employing agencies (pay attention to these since these are the guidelines agencies follow when recruiting), and law enforcement employment opportunities throughout State of California. You can download a practice test, review the actual personal history questionnaire, oral board interview guidelines, and even review the statewide background investigators' manual.
Physical agility tests are agency specific and are not listed on the website, but you should focus on running long distances, sprinting, being able to climb a six foot wall, dragging heavy weights, pullups, pushups, and situps.
