I am about to turn 16, and I am debating with my father whether or not a car is safe for a young driver. He wants me to get an oversized redneck SUV that I want nothing to do with. When I drive my moms Escalade, I have trouble keeping it on the road all of the time because it is so wide. When I drive my dads bmw, I have no problems at all. Is a mustang safe for a first car? Is it heavy enough? Please post websites with your response if you have any. Thanks.

My first car was a big block 69 mustang , my sons first car was a 05 mustang , we are both alive and doing fine . His car is a lot safer than mine ever thought about being .

All cars are built and designed to be safe. It is the drivers that are not safe.

When choosing a car I think it is best to go with whatever you feel most comfortable in. If you are nervous about driving a particular vehicle it is not a feeling that is going to go away in a couple of days. Weight the pros and cons here. If you are able to drive 60-70 (average highway speed) in a mustang and have great control of it but drive an SUV at the same speed and feel out of control then obviously go with the mustang.

Just remember whenever you drive you are the one in control. Exercise caution and beware of other drivers. Good luck in your search!

Basically it all depends on the driver. My father is an ASE certified Master Collision repair technician and you should hear some of the crap 40 year olds do in cars. He's told me about a doctor that put his RV in cruise control and flipped it over because he though it would drive itself while he makes a sandwich. He's also worked on SUVs where someone went 70 in a snowstorm and couldn't stop and augered it until a hillside. Don't forget all those soccermoms in minivans talking on a cellphone on the parkway. Put simply a car is only as safe as whoever's driving it.

Although a major consideration is that Mustangs are higher on insurance especially for younger drivers.

I would think about the cost of insurance on a new ford mustang we're talking muy dinero. For my first car i got a 1977 ford Granada, talk about embarrassment. but it was built heavy and if i was hit there wouldn't be as much damage to me or my car. and insurance was only $20. with a mustang you will want to look cool and drive fast. personally i would go with an older car ( not older than 1990) insurance is cheaper especially for young drivers. Go with an older car first, it will end up saving $.

Well my mustang an 87 is not driven in the rain, I have only got caught a couple of times out in the rain and its a real hand-full. It can start to spin its rear tires just going on the highway. But if its a new one with traction control it would be ok. Hope it does not snow where you live. The new new ones are heavier than I hoped for. A V8 mustang would not be my first choice for anew driver.

okay.

i love mustangs i dream mustangs and if a mustang was a super hott guy i'd marry it, well not sure how my bf would feel about that though... lol. ... im 21 and have owned 3 mustangs ... I currently have a 2001 and love it dearly. These are the issues, I have owned suv's they are dangerous b/c they are so easy rolled, as far as the mustang they can be dangerous in wet weather, very slippery on the roads. Whatever you decide be careful.

you have to learn some more experience before judge cars... escalade is a wonderful car to drive... also mustangs I had one 05 and is agood car but not too safe if you are not so experienced... first don't look to much to the exterior of a car... try learning driving and then yo will buy any car you want...I started on a 1965 mustang that was much rust than car... I wish I had an escalade....

Its definitely in the hands of you, the driver.

But you can buy a Mustang w/ Anti-lock Brakes & Traction Control (it is awesome), AND Front Seat side-mounted Airbags (the airbags are in the seats, so in case of deployment, the side bags will be next to you no matter how far back your seat is); available in even the V6 models.

Its already equipped with both Driver & Passenger Frontal Airbags.

Take a peek.

if you want to be an adult you have to drive like one and you will live to see 17.You could drive a hummer and kill yourself if you drive like a complete fool. mustangs are awesome and treat it with respect and it will be a fun car to drive. The secret is keeping a clear head and a light foot or you will be a disgrace to the manhood.
If you have a problem keeping your mas Escalade on the road, you need to take driving lessons. Even a girl can drive a truck...
