Black, as I've answered to other questions similar to this one, is a serious commitment. It's almost impossible to strip out if you hate it, and if you find a place willing to strip it (because most places won't) the color that would result wouldn't be pretty at all. (I've seen everything on people from odd red shades to dark oranges) The resulting color is almost impossible to dye over as well. Also, very few people that don't have black hair naturally can pull it off. It tends to either make people that are light-complected look reeeaally pale, or clash with most skintones. If you wanted to try it, I would stick with a temporary color like Loreal Color Pulse or Clairol Natural Insticts first. That way if you hate it you're not stuck with it. If you do happen to like the black and want to use a permanent dye, there are some tips I can give you based on the experience of a good friend of mine that dyed her hair black. If you are going for a natural shade of black, stick with colors marked soft or natural black, as opposed to shades like jet or midnight black which tend to have an unnatural, often bluish tint to them. If you're not going for a natural look then I suppose you don't have to worry about it. You'll also want to buy a shampoo and conditioner specifically for colored hair to help keep the color from fading. As for your question about the hair going back to it's normal color, it definitely will. Why do you think you see "roots" on people that obviously color their hair, or people needing to recolor it? Your natural hair doesn't turn the color you dye it unless you have, well, dyed it. There have been extremely rare instances where a person's hair will grow in a different shade than their original natural one, but it's almost never the color they've been dying it. It's actually not a result of the particular color of the dye as much as it is the chemicals in it react to a person in an odd way and alters the color in which their hair grows in. Again, this is extremely rare though. (I'm talking about an almost one in a million type deal.)
In the vast majority of cases, hair untouched by dye won't change color. Hope that helps!

I never dyed my hair either and then one winter I went to the Caribbean for a week. I came back and my hair was all streaky from the sun and salt. It looked a mess. I went out and bought dye to dye it back to my natural color. It wasn't any issue. I dried my hair out slightly, but it was all normal again in no time. Another time I just wanted a little umph because my hair was kinda flat looking - winter slump - so I went and got low-lights. This is when you get darker highlights instead of blond highlights. It was kinda fun and not so "OMG what did you do to your hair!" it didn't change the texture of my hair very much and was back to it's normal color in a few months. Highlights use bleaching agents and really dry out your hair so that it feels like straw. Perms are fun for a change. They will lighten your hair because of the chemicals and also make your hair less shiny. Use lots of conditioner. I think you should do what your want. New hair will grow in and it will all be back to normal after a while. Have some fun!

After a while the roots will go back to your normal color and you'll have to dye it again but it won't cause any damage. it might be a little dry at first but won't be if you get a good brand and it will go away. the only way you'll permanently damage it is from dyeing way to much. i don't think you are going to dye it every week. Are you?lol

if you are dyeing your hair black, make sure that is what you truly want first, it is soooooo hard to get out afterwards. it will fade away eventually, but more along the lines of growing out. before you dye it with something that will do that you should try the Color Pulse stuff, it washes out in about a week or so and it will give you a good idea of whether or not you will really like it. i hope this helps. blessed be.

go see a professional-they can color it with a super non-damaging demi-permanent color that will fade out easily so you don't get harsh roots...but still with it looking black like you want it. Just make sure you think about it good cuz after that is in your hair and you don't want it the only way to get it out is bleach :)

the color can either be permanent (stays 'til you cut it off) semi permanent (washes out in 6 wks) read the box. either way, you'll get permanent damage but you can always grow it out, cut it off, and start over again. (good thing about hair, it's a renewable resource!) best color I ever used was garnier nutrisse, least damage, best condition after dye.
