It depends on how you are planning to use the word.

Is, literally, is a conjugated form of the verb "to be"

There are two verbs in Spanish that correspond to the verb "to be."

One is estar, and the other is ser.

Ser is used when talking about inherent or permanent characteristics, origin, or time.
(She is from..., She is an XYZ kind of person, he has X hair...It is X o'clock)

Estar is used when talking about location, temporary feelings, conditions that are impermanent.
(She is (adj). [today, right now, etc.], He is at (a location), etc.)

For example: Ser is used when talking about the nature of something, like
"An apple is green." This is fact.
La manzana es verde.

As opposed to
"The apple is green," maybe because it is unripe, and thus hasn't yet turned red. In this case, estar would be used.
La manzana esta(') verde.

Full conjugations
Ser

Yo soy
Tu eres
El/ella/Ud. es
Nosotros somos
Vosotros sois
Ellos/ellas/Uds. son

Estar
yo estoy
tú estás
él está
nosotros estamos
vosotros estáis
ellos están

Hope this helps.

There are two ways and it depends on context. Es is for something that can't really be changed like a name or a race or nationality. He's American. Es un Americano. She's a woman. Ella es una mujer.

But está is used for temporary things like feelings or places where one is at. She is at the store. Ella está en la tienda. She's mad. Está enojada.

The verb To be, "is" in English translates into two different verbs in Spanish, "ser" and "estar". Ser means to be something, like in "He is tall" - "El es alto" it also translates into the verb "estar" which means to be somewhere. "El esta aqui" - "He is here" This is all of course for the third person conjugation.
