You fail to mention why you are unable to do critical updates from Microsoft. They will tell you if your platform fails to pass their WGA, (Windows Genuine Advantage). Tool that checks your registration key to see if your platform is valid. If it is not valid you will not get any updates or download of any program from Microsoft. Plus if they desire they can shut down your entire system.

If your platform is prior to Windows XP Pro. SP 1 or Windows XP Home, Microsoft does not support any platforms prior.

If you are using platform prior to the above you will have to purchase an updated platform.

When updating Windows (if you have XP sp1) you must have the Windows Firewall or your own Firewall activated. You must also have Windows Update turned on. You can get thier from Right-clicking the MY Computer link in your start menu and scrolling down to Properties. Then click the Automatic Updates Tab.

What version? If it is Windows98, be aware that Microsoft no longer supports it in any way.

If it is WindowsXP and (underline and) you have a legitimate copy, you should be able to update by clicking on Tools, Windows Update, while in Internet Explorer.

If it's because you don't have a genuine copy of windows, you can purchase one directly from Microsoft.

Your firewall may be blocking the update.
I had the same problem on my old pc. The fire wall had to be turned off.

Best of luck.
