Your pet's first line of defense against fleas is a flea comb and a good bath. Soap acts as a gentle insecticide and helps control light infestations on your pet. Though time consuming, combing helps reduce the need for insecticides. Flea combs have fine teeth that remove adult fleas from fur. Most dogs and cats seem to enjoy this treatment; pay special attention to the face and neck, and the area in front of the tail. Dip the comb frequently in soapy water to kill fleas removed from the pet.

Garlic, cedar bedding and various herbal sachets may also be helpful in suppressing flea populations. Volatile oils in fresh cedar chips are toxic to fleas, but the effect lasts a very short time. Tests have shown that Brewer's yeast does not protect pets from fleas.

Go to a pet store(petsmart, Pets Plus, etc.) and they can show lots of shampoos, and treatments for your cat that are completely harmless. You also need to get rid of the fleas in the house. Washing anything that came into contact with the cat helps but be prepared to battle for a while. Your house is going to be a bigger problem than the animal. Some sprays are offered that kill all stages of the flea and are not harmful to the animal or humans. I am speaking from experience with cats and dogs.

I have a book on natural secrets to a pest free property.I ordered it from an infomercial.(I NEVER do that either but many thing from this book have worked for me). Here are a couple of suggestions from that book.1)Fleas hate the odor of sage.Crush it into a fine powder rub it on your cats skin.Allow it to remain for 15 to 20 minutes, then brush it out. 2)Daily spraying of a fine mist prepared from Dr. Bronner's Peppermint Soap should do the trick. It should be done daily for the first week, then once a week for the next 4 weeks. 3)put 2 ounces of pennyroyal,1 ounce of catnip,1 ounce of chamomile mixed up inside a pillow that your cat sleeps on. 4)your vet can recommend a vitamin B supplement for your cat.Fleas will not remain on a pet if they are on a vitamin B supplement. These suggestions come from a book called 1001 All Natural Secrets to a Pest Free Property by Dr. Myles H Bader. There are more ideas in the book as well.

You have to be very careful getting rid of fleas at this time of the year. I like to put my cat outside after I deflea her. The fleas can drop off outside instead of in the house. I had fleas in the house one winter, it took a very long time, loads of treatments, numerous flea bits on my angles before the fleas were under control. What I do now is, give the cat a good bath in nice warm water, soak her in up to her head and drown those damn fleas. When you see them crawl up around her face kill them with tweezers. Sounds cruel, but my cat was comfortable as long as the water was the right temperature.

My puppies have fleas too and I called the vet and asked them how to get rid of the fleas without hurting my puppies and they said dawn dish washing soap. There is one thing about it though, it will kill most of the fleas and the eggs but not all of them. Maybe if you washed you cat more than once, it might work.

Bath your cat in Baby Shampoo and put Avon Skin So Soft on him. The Skin So Soft keeps the fleas away.

Bathing her in Dawn Dish Detergent will get rid of the ones on her, but that won't accomplish anything if you don't get rid of the ones in the house, so vacuum like you are possessed!!! Raid for fleas helps too. You also might want to try Revolution-- it's another monthly topical. Good Luck!!
