I know of a mother who had no patience for teaching her daughter how to do practical things that every other parent teaches their kids and she never ever allowed her to figure things out on her own - her mother insisted on doing EVERYTHING for her and never let her have responsibility at all. She was an only child - no pets, no friends, only her mother. Now she's about 15...the poor girl can't even use a can opener or hold a puppy without freaking out. She lacks judgement and is pretty dependent on others to help her with practical things. Do you think a WAY sheltered upbringing can cause this?

Most definitely.
I think one of the biggest problems with modern youth, not quite excluding myself, is that for generations now, we seem to have no "right of passage".
Sort of a building up then final proclamation that a child is now a responsible adult. People seem to forget that to build a muscle, one must stress the muscle. And a persons character is no different.

One must be allowed to feel the consequence of their own mistakes, it is the only way to create the proper mental responses.
There is always that first time you touch something hot and get burned, but every single time afterwards, you feel heat and instinctively snatch your hand back.

You can teach many things to a person, but instincts and the indivduals reaction to stress are things that can only be created and refined by the individual themselves.

sure it can - esp. in this case. I think I'm pretty over-protective in that I'm careful who my kids play with and where they are allowed to go, however, they have many responsibilities at home and have been out in the world, making friends, and holding puppies. Every parent has to figure our where their comfort level is and how to best help their kids.

Without a doubt it can. The poor child has no way of knowing how to gauge any situation without looking to Mommy for the answer. Sadly enough while trying to shelter her child she has only made it harder for her to cope in the real world, this kid is in for a rude awakening "IF" she ever leaves the comfort of her mommies nest.

Absolutely.
Parents must allow their kids to try things on their own, even if it means making mistakes.

Humans learn by example and by experimentation. They are required skills in order to be successful in everything.

This kid is destined to have major problems in college and in the workplace because in those situations, a person is expected to figure things out.

I feel bad for this kid. Its an uphill battle.

Yes.

And I think that mother should be slapped. There is a point where one must allow their child to step out into the world and (yes) make mistakes. One learns more from mistakes than from someone doing everything for them.
