I realize my answer is different than the others, but look at this from a scientific point.

Sugar does not cause hyperactivity. I know there has been lots of hype suggesting that may be true, but it really is not. If you check the research literature at www.pubmed.com, you will find the research says sugar is changed to blood glucose, and by itself does not cause hyperactivity.

There is a little truth to the statement that chocolate a caffeine like compound, and with lots of chocolate you may get a little buzz, but about 1/2 the kick of coffee. What about the young child that gets hyper after eating chocolate candy and drinking a coke? When you consider the mg of caffeine per kg of body weight, they child may be getting 2 to 4 times the amount of caffeine of an adult. That is why some people are convinced that a child gets hyper with sugar.

So, when the chocolate kisses "call" to you, you can answer OK occasionally. Remember kisses also have calories!

Enjoy (carefully). Lenore Hodges, PhD, RD, LD

Many years ago, there was a study that 'disproved' the sugar/hyperactivity link. At the time I was managing kitchens for a large school district (127 schools) in Northern California and cooked for one of the larger (1200 students) Elementary Schools in the same district. I still believe in the sugar/hyperactivity link, because I saw it in action around every major 'candy' holiday at that school. The researchers who did this study, however, said it was purely psychological. It may be. *shrug* One can never tell for sure with small children.

One thing you can't deny, however, is that chocolate contains caffeine. If you are sensitive to caffeine and are popping Hershey's Kisses, of course you're going to feel it. In that case, yes, it would be normal. For you. I drink tons of coffee, so for me, that would not be normal.

Generally speaking, the darker the chocolate, the higher the level of caffeine. Ironically, the darker the chocolate, the higher the level of anti-oxidants as well!

ETA: Brian is right. If this is happening after just one, you will want to have bloodwork done at your doctor's office.

It's chocolate with a lot of sugar in it. It's probably the sugar that is making you so hyper.
There have been studies that indicate chocolate is a mood elevator, in the best possible sense. Try dark chocolate with a lower sugar content to curb the hyper effects. (And try to stay away from refined sugar. It's super addictive and not particularly good for you.)

I don't know if it's normal or not, I do know that there have been informal studies about whether chocolate milk causes kids to be more hyper and it was shown that kids acted the same whether they drank white or chocolate milk.

Hmmm depends on how much of them you eat before getting hyper. If you get hyper after just eating one then you may want to go see a doctor, and get some blood work done just to make sure everything is ok. If your getting hyper lets say after popping about 20 of them in your mouth then your okay. Its normal to get a rush after eating surgary substances.

I think it CAN be normal if you get hyper with other food items like that...I know that some kids get hyper if they eat a lot of chocolate.
