It is sort of the opposite of the old saying "Sticks and stones can break my bones but names can never hurt me". Words can hurt a great deal, and can cause a great deal of damage. If we say something often enough, we begin to believe it, even if we didn't really believe it in the first place. Our words influence our subconscious thinking and our attitudes and approach to life. For example, if you call a child "stupid" often enough, not only will he begin to believe it, but he will begin to live it, and you will believe it too.

Although this goes somewhat beyond your question, I read once that the person you are is the sum total of every experience you have had. So your attitudes and feelings about others is influenced by what you say and hear.

In other words, if you repeatedly call someone who respects your opinion, bad things, or flattering things, they will take it to heart. Keep your comments positive so as not to make a self fulfilling prophecy of being stupid, lazy, worthless, etc.. Kill a person's esteem and you can make them believe you, and not even try to be a better person. Build a person up, and they will strive to live up to your opinon of them.
